Defense Headquarters Addresses U.S. Military Personnel Reports
The Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified misunderstandings surrounding the presence of U.S. military personnel in Nigeria, emphasizing that only troops deployed for a specific counter-terrorism mission in the Lake Chad Basin have returned home. This announcement comes amidst growing concerns following recent media reports.
Clarification from Defense Leadership
During a press briefing on Friday, Major General Marcus Kange, the Director of Defense Intelligence, reiterated that the departing personnel were part of a temporary mission and should not be mistaken for the U.S. military units that are continuously engaged in intelligence sharing, training, and joint operations with the Nigerian armed forces.
Ongoing Security Partnership
Major General Kange emphasized that the enduring security partnership between Nigeria and the USA remains strong. “The commander was referring to additional troops assigned for a specific mission in the Lake Chad region. Previously stationed U.S. military personnel remain in Nigeria,” he stated, asserting that intelligence collaboration between the two nations continues without interruption.
Temporary Assignments Explained
Elaborating on the nature of deployments, Kange explained that the United States occasionally sends additional personnel for targeted operations, which leave after their specific missions are accomplished. “As witnessed in May, there can be a need for additional forces to successfully complete certain objectives. These deployments are intended for short-term purposes only,” he noted.
Response to Recent Statements
This clarification follows comments from General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, the commander of U.S. Air Forces in Africa, who reported that most additional troops sent to Nigeria have been withdrawn after a successful joint counter-terrorism operation disrupted ISIS activities in the region. Anderson highlighted Nigeria’s operations in the Lake Chad Basin as beneficial not only for neighboring countries but also for global efforts against ISIS.
Continued Cooperation Highlighted
Anderson described Nigeria as a critical security partner for the U.S. in Africa and commendably acknowledged the capabilities of the Nigerian military alongside the growing intelligence cooperation. He stated, “Our recent partnership underscores Nigeria’s strengths as a large, capable country with a robust economy and educated workforce. Collaborative intelligence efforts have proven significant in addressing terrorism effectively.”
Commitment to Joint Counter-Terrorism Efforts
The Defense Headquarters firmly reassured that the conclusion of the temporary deployment in the Lake Chad Basin does not imply a decrease in military collaboration with the United States. The ongoing intelligence sharing, training, and joint counter-terrorism operations will continue as part of the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
