Encouragement for Religious Leaders
During the meeting, President Tinubu commended the efforts of bishops and religious leaders, urging them to continue their vital work in preaching messages of peace and tolerance. He emphasized the importance of interfaith dialogue as a critical approach to addressing the nation’s security challenges.
Support for the Catholic Church
Tinubu shared his longstanding relationship with the Catholic Church, highlighting his support during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State. He underscored his commitment to returning mission schools to religious institutions, a move he prioritized upon taking office, which was prompted by their requisition during a previous military regime.
Recognizing the Catholic Church’s Contributions
Expressing gratitude for the Papal leadership, Tinubu remarked on the significant role the Catholic Church plays in enhancing education, healthcare, and humanitarian efforts in Nigeria. He stated, “The contributions of the Church are invaluable, and our country benefits immensely from these endeavors.”
Ongoing Security Measures
The President assured Archbishop Gallagher of the military’s recent progress in combating insecurity, stressing the importance of sustaining these improvements. He acknowledged the allocation of additional resources to enhance security measures, including increased surveillance in previously unstable regions.
Investing in Youth to Combat Radicalization
In a proactive move, Tinubu highlighted the government’s investment in youth programs designed to prevent their recruitment by terror groups and decrease their susceptibility to radicalization. This initiative aligns with his broader strategy to create a more secure and stable Nigeria.
Celebrating a Historic Relationship
Archbishop Gallagher, in his visit, marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See. He recognized Nigeria’s strategic importance for the Catholic Church due to its robust Catholic community. He expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s peace-promoting efforts and optimism about the ongoing collaboration between the Church and the Nigerian government.
Accompanied by notable representatives from the Apostolic See of Nigeria, Gallagher conveyed his eagerness to welcome Nigeria’s ambassador to the Holy See in the forthcoming weeks, signaling the potential for further engagements between the two entities.
