Concerns Rise Within ADC Over El-Rufai’s Leaked Letter
A handwritten letter allegedly from former Kaduna State governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has sparked renewed worries about the internal dynamics of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna. The letter warns that recent party decisions could jeopardize its unity and undermine preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Details of the Letter to Party Leadership
Dated May 20, 2026, the letter is addressed to ADC National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola. Copies have also been sent to Kaduna State Chairman Najatu Mohammed and all gubernatorial candidates within the state.
Electoral Committee Composition Under Scrutiny
In his correspondence, El-Rufai raised alarm about the electoral committee’s composition, arguing it poses a risk to the credibility of the gubernatorial primary in Kaduna. He insisted that the committee’s alleged bias could affect the acceptance of its results, giving an unfair advantage to certain candidates.
Claims of Non-Neutrality
El-Rufai expressed specific concerns regarding members of the committee, stating, “I am concerned that the current composition of the Electoral Commission includes a known agent of Uba Sani and three representatives of one of my gubernatorial aspirants.” He believes this could lead to the results being discredited and ultimately assist Uba Sani.
Public Silence from Uba Sani
Despite these serious claims, El-Rufai has not provided any evidence, and Governor Uba Sani has yet to respond to the allegations publicly.
Frustration Over Exclusion from Party Decisions
El-Rufai further criticized what he sees as his exclusion from critical decisions within the party, despite his pivotal role in establishing a coalition government that integrated various stakeholders into the ADC. “I am disappointed that my detention means that I, as one of its leaders, have been sidelined from all discussions in Kaduna State and the North West,” he lamented.
Call for Restructuring the Electoral Commission
To address these concerns, El-Rufai urged the leadership to dissolve the current electoral commission. He suggested replacing it with a body that genuinely reflects the interests of all parties involved. “I recommend a five-member Electoral Commission equitably represented by all key gubernatorial candidates,” he stated, proposing Dr. Awwal Anwar from Kano State as a new chairperson.
Potential Impacts on ADC’s Future
While the authenticity of El-Rufai’s letter remains unverified, its publication has the potential to ignite significant discourse surrounding internal democracy, leadership, and consultation within the ADC. As political parties gear up for the 2027 elections, the implications of this situation could be pivotal for the party’s future in Kaduna.
