Integrating Reforestation with Climate Change Initiatives
Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan has unveiled the 10,000 Economic Trees Project in Kogi Central Senatorial District, alongside the commissioning of free Wi-Fi facilities at the Federal College of Education (FCE) in Oken. This dual initiative aims not only to combat climate change but also to enhance digital accessibility while empowering the youth.
According to a statement from her media office, the project was announced over the weekend as a strategic move to merge environmental sustainability with digital inclusion, aiming to improve livelihoods and generate lasting economic opportunities for local residents.
During the launch of the tree-planting initiative, aptly themed “Growing Kogi Central, Building Our Future,” Akpoti Uduaghan emphasized that the project aligns with the climate goals set forth in the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP) framework, marking Kogi Central’s commitment to global climate action.
The initiative focuses on planting 10,000 meticulously selected economic trees, including mango, guava, orange, moringa, Indian neem, and other native species known for their environmental, nutritional, medicinal, and commercial value. Beyond fostering environmental conservation, this project is expected to enhance food security, restore degraded lands, boost biodiversity, and elevate agricultural productivity and household incomes within the district.
“Today, Kogi Central joins a global movement against climate change. Each tree we plant symbolizes hope and our collective resolve to ensure a healthier environment and a robust economy for future generations,” the senator remarked. She added that this endeavor embodies commitments made at UN climate conferences to mitigate climate change through sustainable practices and ecosystem restoration.
Highlighting the intentional selection of economic tree species, Akpoti Uduaghan asserted that environmental stewardship and economic prosperity should work in harmony rather than at odds. “Our communities shouldn’t have to choose between environmental conservation and economic livelihood. These trees will provide cleaner air, healthier living conditions, and enhanced food production,” she stated, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the immediate impacts of climate change, such as rising temperatures and soil erosion.
Enhancing Digital Connectivity in Education
In a separate initiative, the senator inaugurated the installation of a comprehensive free Wi-Fi facility across the Federal University of Education’s campus, a move that has been warmly received by students as a significant step towards advancing digital education and closing the technology gap.
This internet access aims to provide students with unlimited opportunities to access academic resources, digital libraries, online courses, research materials, and global learning platforms. Speaking to students post-installation, Akpoti Uduaghan highlighted that in today’s knowledge-driven society, internet connectivity is crucial for education, innovation, and economic empowerment.
“Investing in education is perhaps the most significant investment we can make for our future. In the modern era, internet access transcends being a luxury; it is a foundational tool for learning, creativity, and economic growth,” she remarked. The project is designed not only to remove barriers to information and academic excellence but also to equip students with the digital skills necessary to thrive globally.
She elaborated that improved digital connectivity would introduce students to international learning resources, artificial intelligence, software development, online certifications, entrepreneurship, and remote work opportunities. Students have described this initiative as one of the university’s most pivotal educational advancements in recent years, anticipating a positive impact on academic research, virtual learning, and skill acquisition required for competing in the global digital economy.
Educators also hailed the initiative, noting that reliable internet access is indispensable for contemporary education, innovation, and academic collaboration. They expressed hope that similar digital infrastructure projects will be implemented in other higher education institutions across Kogi Central, further establishing the district as a hub for innovation, technology-driven education, and sustainable development.
