Renaissance Africa Energy Makes Major Oil Discovery off Nigeria’s Coast
Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has announced the discovery of a substantial reservoir of light oil off Nigeria’s coast. This marks the indigenous operator’s first significant finding since acquiring one of Nigeria’s largest offshore concessions just a year ago.
Successful Exploration at JK-004
In a statement released Tuesday, Renaissance detailed that its JK-004 exploration well, drilled in shallow waters of Oil Drilling Lease 74, encountered approximately 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing rock distributed across seven distinct reservoirs.
Positive Initial Findings
Initial assessments from wireline logs and fluid samples have suggested promising reservoir quality along with a lighter, more valuable grade of crude oil, indicating favorable conditions for future operations.
Leadership Highlights Exploration Success
According to Tony Attah, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, this discovery exemplifies the strength of Renaissance’s exploration program. Just over a year ago, the company took control of assets that include a suite of 18 licenses, two export terminals, and a floating production vessel in the Niger Delta, previously managed by major international players.
Collaboration and Strategic Oversight
Attah attributed the success of JK-004 to the collaborative efforts of regulators, staff, and joint venture partners. The operation is conducted in partnership with the Nigerian National Oil Company, Total Energy, and Agip Energy and Natural Resources. He named key figures, including Bayo Ojulari, Group CEO of NNPC, and upstream chief Udobong Ntia, as instrumental in guiding the joint venture.
Focus on Future Development
John Bosco Uche, Vice President of Exploration and Principal Explorer at Renaissance, emphasized that the well represents a commitment to “subsurface excellence, technical rigor, and a disciplined approach to reserve exchange.” He pointed out that the well’s proximity to existing infrastructure will facilitate a faster route to production.
Support from Regulatory Bodies
Oritumeiwa Isan, CEO of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, stated this discovery aligns with regulatory efforts to bolster the country’s reserves, ensuring sustainable national growth. He assured ongoing regulatory support for operators within the sector.
Significance for Indigenous Exploration
Lai Fatna, Chairman of Renaissance’s Board of Directors, remarked that this discovery highlights the untapped potential of Nigeria’s oil fields and emphasizes the importance of disciplined, technology-driven exploration. He noted the critical role indigenous businesses play in unlocking value, attracting investment, and contributing significantly to national energy security and economic growth.
NNPC’s Commitment to Reserve Replacement
Congratulating the joint venture on the well’s successful construction, Ntia announced that NNPC would enhance its support for reserve replacement initiatives akin to the JK-004 project.
Acknowledgment of Industry Leadership
Recently, Renaissance was recognized by research firm Wood Mackenzie as Africa’s largest oil and gas company. The firm operates Nigeria’s largest upstream joint venture, leveraging a substantial shallow-water portfolio that has sustained the country’s oil production for decades.
