First-Term APC Governors Endorse Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have publicly backed President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms and expressed their commitment to sustaining the “New Hope” agenda through the 2027 general elections.
This endorsement was made on Tuesday by Kebbi Governor Nasir Idris, who presented a communiqué from the governors’ forum after their meeting in Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris emphasized that the communiqué represents a unified dedication to fostering patriotism, accountability, national service, and long-term stability in Nigeria. He acknowledged the challenging economic realities facing the nation but praised the resilience of its citizens.
He pointed out that the burden of the necessary economic adjustments has fallen heavily on families, workers, farmers, traders, transporters, youth, and women.
Despite these challenges, the forum asserted that the federal government’s current policies are pivotal in rectifying the fiscal, security, and developmental shortfalls that have built up over decades. The communiqué outlines that these reforms aim to stabilize the economy, restore public finances, boost productivity, attract both domestic and foreign investments, and fortify the national security framework.
The governors believe these reforms will establish a sustainable foundation for enduring growth and shared prosperity. They reiterated their unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the New Hope Agenda, framing this as a commitment to national recovery, shared prosperity, democratic stability, and the preservation of Nigeria as a united federation.
They appealed to citizens across all regions, religions, and ethnic backgrounds to remain united, to transcend temporary obstacles, and to endorse the economic transformation agenda. Additionally, the governors called for enhanced social protection measures and relief initiatives geared towards supporting vulnerable communities.
Addressing National Security Concerns
Regarding the country’s security challenges, the governors voiced their profound concern over persistent threats, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and recent assaults on educational institutions. They condemned these acts vehemently, particularly the kidnappings and violence in schools, which threaten both education and public trust.
The governors committed to reinforcing school safety measures and enhancing community security by fostering collaboration among state governments, federal security bodies, traditional leaders, and local intelligence networks. They also stressed the importance of prompt rescues and the strict prosecution of those responsible for such crimes.
Diplomatic Action on Tensions in South Africa
The communiqué also addressed recent international tensions, particularly the alarming reports of hostility towards Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa. The governors reaffirmed their respect for South Africa’s sovereignty and their historical ties, while unequivocally condemning xenophobia and mob violence.
They urged South African authorities to conduct thorough investigations into these incidents, protect law-abiding foreign residents, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable under international law.
