Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robbers in Oyo State
The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended two individuals suspected of armed robbery and recovered a firearm linked to a recent robbery incident along the Oyo-Iwo Expressway in the Afijio Local Government Area of the state.
Details of the Incident
According to the police spokesperson, DSP Olinka Ayanlade, the incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday, July 5, 2026, when the Elele Police Control Room received a report about armed robbers blocking the highway near Akoda village.
Victims Targeted
The attackers targeted a vehicle transporting passengers and goods from a local market to Iwo town, reportedly injuring some victims with machetes during the brazen assault.
Police Response and Recovery
Ayanlade stated that the Oyo State Police Command achieved a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat violent crime with the arrests and the recovery of firearms linked to the robbery incident. Following the distress call, Police Commissioner Abimbola Olugbenga promptly directed officers from the Violent Crimes Unit to the scene, where they secured the area and rescued the victims. A thorough search resulted in the recovery of a single-barreled gun and two clubs reportedly utilized by the assailants.
Intelligence-Led Investigation
Subsequent intelligence operations led officers to the suspects’ hideout. The two suspects, identified as Abubakar Jape and Xu Denggui, were taken into custody. During questioning, both suspects admitted their participation in the robbery. An identification parade confirmed their involvement, with victims clearly recognizing them as the attackers. Additionally, a rechargeable flashlight belonging to one victim was discovered at one of the suspects’ hideouts.

Commissioner Abimbola Olugbenga praised the operatives for their swift and professional response, asserting that the arrests underscore the command’s commitment to eradicating violent crime in the region. He reassured residents that efforts are underway to apprehend any remaining gang members and encouraged the public to continue providing timely, reliable information to law enforcement agencies.
