The situation surrounding Folarin Balogun’s overturned red card during the World Cup has escalated as more details come to light.
On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he personally reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to urge a reconsideration of the initial red card decision that had sidelined the American striker in the round of 16.
Balogun, who stood out for the United States during the 2026 FIFA World Cup by scoring three goals, received a straight red card in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This dismissal happened during VAR review, which deemed his challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic deserving of a sending-off.
The immediate consequence of this decision was a one-match suspension, which excluded the Monaco striker from participating in the first knockout round against Belgium. However, in a surprising turn of events, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced on Sunday that they would invoke Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, suspending Balogun’s automatic one-match ban during a one-year trial period, thereby allowing him to be available for selection against Belgium.
Trump acknowledges involvement in FIFA’s review process
During a White House press briefing on Monday, President Trump confirmed his discussions with Infantino but emphasized that his intention was to request a review rather than to influence the disciplinary proceedings directly.
Trump stated, “All I did was ask for a review. I didn’t say we have to do this,” adding, “Gianni Infantino is a smart and tough leader.” He expressed concern for ensuring that the best players represent the team on the field.
The president admitted he initially lacked a complete understanding of soccer’s disciplinary regulations but found the red card penalty to be “very unfair,” questioning how a player could be punished without a foul occurring. He criticized the referee’s reliance on VAR, asserting, “I didn’t think it was a foul,” and considering the incident more an athletic collision than a transgression.
Infantino responds to Trump’s comments
In response to Trump’s remarks, FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed their conversation but strongly refuted any claims of political meddling influencing the disciplinary decisions. Infantino stated that FIFA’s judiciary operates independently of the organization’s leadership.
He explained, “FIFA’s judicial body is independent,” and stressed the importance of respecting this autonomy to uphold the integrity of football. He also noted, “I received calls from leaders around the world on various issues, and I always respect the autonomy of FIFA’s decisions.”
Belgium’s formal protest against Balogun’s reinstatement
The controversy deepened when the Belgian Football Federation formally protested Balogun’s return. FIFA dismissed this appeal on procedural grounds, stating that the Belgian Federation lacked the standing to contest the decision.
In their statement, FIFA underlined that “there is nothing in the FIFA Disciplinary Code or the regulations that prevents the FIFA Disciplinary Committee from exercising its discretion,” allowing them to suspend disciplinary actions under Article 27.
The incident leading to Balogun’s dismissal
Balogun had initially established his performance by scoring a goal in the 45th minute, contributing to the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, his fortunes turned in the 64th minute when, following a VAR review, referee Rafael Klaus reversed his original decision, issuing Balogun a straight red card for a disputed challenge.
This suspension would have kept Balogun out of the following match against Belgium until FIFA’s timely intervention reinstated him.
U.S. government involvement in Balogun’s appeal
U.S. officials confirmed that Trump and Infantino discussed the situation, with the president seeking clarification regarding the red card and suspension. The U.S. government was also involved during the appeal process, providing additional evidence which was considered in the ruling.
The official stated, “The U.S. government provided additional evidence that was used in the appellate proceeding,” and expressed satisfaction with the outcome.
U.S. Soccer expresses support for favorable ruling
U.S. Soccer accepted FIFA’s ruling and swiftly shifted focus to the upcoming match against Belgium. The federation released a statement welcoming the decision, stating, “We are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to play tomorrow. We look forward to our Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle.” U.S. Soccer reiterated its commitment to the team and its passionate supporters.
Support for referee following criticism
Amid growing criticism of Balogun’s red card reversal, FIFA defended Brazilian referee Rafael Klaus, asserting that he has consistently demonstrated professionalism throughout his career. Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer, also voiced confidence in Klaus’s abilities, noting his experience from refereeing in previous World Cups, including Qatar 2022.
The South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL further acknowledged Klaus’s integrity and professionalism amidst the ongoing controversy.
Balogun’s availability ignited hope for the U.S. team
With Balogun’s suspension lifted, he will participate in the clash as the U.S. seeks to advance to the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 2002. Despite their aspirations, the U.S. team faced a challenging matchup against Belgium, who were favored to win the encounter.
