Nigeria and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Consular Ties
Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have reached an agreement to enhance their consular cooperation, emphasizing visa facilitation, the welfare of Nigerians residing in Saudi Arabia, and the repatriation of detained nationals. This development follows a courtesy visit by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Yakubu Gambo, to the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular Affairs in Riyadh. The information was confirmed in a statement released by Idris Zalauta, the media aide to the Nigerian Ambassador.
The meeting occurred shortly after Dr. Gambo attended a farewell event hosted by the Head of the Diplomatic Corps for the outgoing Indian Ambassador and the US Charge d’Affaires. During their discussions, both officials took a close look at ongoing challenges facing Nigerians in Saudi Arabia, particularly concerning visa processes and efforts aimed at the release and repatriation of eligible detained Nigerians. They also committed to enhancing cooperation to combat irregular migration.
In his remarks, Ambassador Gambo reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to broadening relations with Saudi Arabia beyond the traditional focus on the annual Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. The Saudi Deputy Minister responded with assurances of continued support for enhanced consular cooperation to better serve the needs of Nigerian nationals in the Kingdom.
This engagement highlights Nigeria’s proactive approach to safeguarding its citizens abroad while also aiming to diversify its relationship with Saudi Arabia in areas such as trade, security, and migration management.
EFCC Transfers Recovered Cybercrime Assets to Education Ministry
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoede, has officially handed over 1,452 items to the Federal Ministry of Education, recovered from a recent cybercrime operation. During the transfer ceremony held in Abuja, he presented these assets to Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, indicating that they were seized during a major anti-cybercrime initiative in 2024.
The recovered items include 501 bunk beds, 939 mattresses, and 12 wooden beds, all retrieved during a special operation named “Operation Eagle Flash.” Olukoede emphasized that this transfer aligns with the federal government’s strategy to allocate the proceeds of crime to critical social sectors.
Further detailing the operations, he noted that the assets were seized under “Operation Ecoforge,” which represents the largest cybercrime initiative targeting the education sector. The operation led to the arrest of 792 suspects, including 193 foreigners, all of whom were investigated, indicted, and convicted, with foreign nationals repatriated after serving their sentences.
Olukoede articulated a strategic intent behind transferring the recovered items to the education sector. He pointed out that children and young people are often the most affected by corruption and financial crime; therefore, addressing these issues through educational investment is crucial. He highlighted a precedent, where proceeds from crime have previously been directed toward educational advancements, such as the establishment of Kachia Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kaduna State from confiscated university assets.
Additionally, he mentioned the Student Loan Fund as a key beneficiary of the recovered assets, noting that these funds assist in covering tuition fees and providing monthly stipends for young Nigerians facing financial challenges in pursuing education. He connected this initiative to crime prevention strategies, emphasizing that financial hardship often drives students toward cybercrime.
Olukoede stressed the importance of this handover for improving the infrastructure and facilities within secondary and tertiary educational institutions. He affirmed the EFCC’s ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Education to ensure that these assets are effectively utilized. In response, the Minister of Education expressed gratitude for the EFCC’s efforts in recovery and promised to assign the assets to areas in the greatest need, particularly targeting Unity Schools across Nigeria to enhance student learning conditions.
