Dame Sarah Storey has officially declared her retirement from competitive sports, bringing to a close a remarkable career that solidified her as Britain’s most successful Paralympic athlete. The 48-year-old leaves behind a legacy of 19 Paralympic gold medals across swimming and cycling, a British record, as she steps back two years ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where she had planned to compete in her tenth Paralympic event.
Storey first made waves at the 1992 Barcelona Games, where a then-14-year-old took a leave of absence from school to participate, clinching two gold medals in swimming. She followed this success with an impressive performance at the 1996 Atlanta Games, where she secured three more golds.
Shifting her focus to cycling, Storey achieved further accolades, claiming a total of 14 gold medals in the sport, including nine in road cycling and five in track competitions. Notably, she celebrated an impressive homecoming during the London Games, winning four gold medals. After another double victory in Paris in 2024, she retired while still reigning as Paralympic champion.
“While I believe I could reach the start line in Los Angeles and potentially defend my titles from Paris, I recognize that I can have a more significant impact in a new role,” Storey explained. “This will allow me to advocate for para-sport and the recognition it rightfully deserves.”
Her retirement announcement comes in light of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where para-sport will be integrated into the mainstream competition schedule. Storey expressed her belief that significant progress is needed in the realm of para-sport, especially since momentum has stagnated since the London 2012 Games.
“It’s clear that further development is crucial in para-sport. My decision is partly fueled by the fact that the years between Games have not been effectively utilized to generate the momentum we had hoped for,” she remarked. “I am excited to contribute to a future that fosters the energy necessary for all para-athletes.”
