McIlroy and Scheffler Lead the Charge in Genesis Scottish Open
After the opening round of the Genesis Scottish Open, Rory McIlroy shares the lead with five other contenders, while Scottie Scheffler remains in striking distance after a strong start.
McIlroy, playing his first round since the U.S. Open, carded a 5-under-par 65 at the Renaissance Club, securing a tie for the top spot with Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Højgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger.
World No. 2 Brooks Koepka also showed promise on the opening day, reminiscent of his 2020 tournament victory. He recorded one eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys, finding himself just a stroke behind the leaders.
As the leaderboard crowded up, 71 players were tightly grouped just five strokes apart following the first round. PGA Championship winner Aaron Rye struggled, finishing at 1-over 71, while Jon Rahm salvaged his day with two late birdies, concluding at 3-over 73.
Strong Performances Highlight McIlroy’s Round
McIlroy started on the back nine and faced an early setback with a bogey on the first hole. However, he quickly bounced back with a birdie on the par-5 12th, followed by additional gains at the 14th and 16th holes. Although he missed a par save on the 18th, he made an impressive 18-foot eagle on the first.
Throughout the round, McIlroy demonstrated notable consistency. He acknowledged his solid ball-striking, noting the importance of putting his shots in play and creating scoring opportunities.
Cantlay, meanwhile, achieved a bogey-free round, notching five birdies, while Wiesberger briefly led until he bogeyed the last two holes. Højgaard fell to 6-under but stumbled with a double bogey on the par-4 16th.
