ADC Urges Federal Government to Intensify Efforts Against Kidnappings
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has praised the successful rescue of students, teachers, and other victims kidnapped from schools in Oriile Local Government Area of Oyo State, who endured 56 days in captivity. The party has called on the Federal Government to apply similar resolve in securing the release of schoolchildren and other victims still held captive in Borno and Kiama, Kwara State.
Government’s Responsibility to Prevent Kidnappings
While acknowledging the positive outcome of the rescue operation, opposition parties emphasized that the government’s primary duty is to prevent kidnappings, rather than merely respond to them. They argue that, although successful rescue missions deserve recognition, the focus must shift to root causes and prevention strategies.
Extending Support to Families of Remaining Victims
In a statement released by National Public Relations Secretary Malam Bolaji Abdullahi on Saturday, the ADC commended the security agencies and everyone involved in the rescue efforts. “We celebrate the return of these victims and empathize with the families whose prolonged and painful wait has finally concluded,” the statement read.
Urgency Required for Abductees Still in Captivity
Despite this success, the ADC expressed concern for the many families whose loved ones remain missing. “While we celebrate this positive development, we cannot forget that numerous other families are still enduring this nightmare,” the statement continued. Victims abducted in Borno State in May, as well as over 100 individuals kidnapped in Kiama, remain in captivity, highlighting an ongoing crisis.
Need for Proactive Security Measures
The ADC argues that the persistent wave of abductions underscores an urgent need for the government to prioritize preventive measures against such incidents. “Every successful rescue is commendable, yet every kidnapping serves as a reminder that preventing such crimes should be a government’s foremost responsibility,” they stated.
Impact of Persistent Insecurity on Trust and Development
The party further voiced concerns that ongoing insecurity under the current administration threatens public trust and economic progress. “Under President Tinubu, insecurity has become an ingrained part of daily life for many Nigerians. This situation is untenable for achieving sustainable economic growth, attracting investment, and fostering public confidence,” read the report.
Call for Comprehensive Security Strategies
The ADC urged the Federal Government to build on the momentum from the Oriile rescue by utilizing similar intelligence and operational strategies to secure the freedom of all individuals still held hostage. “Every life is valuable, and the plight of victims should not be overlooked simply because they lack advocates or visibility,” they asserted.
Advocating for Proactive Security Measures
Lastly, the party called on the government to transcend reactive security measures and address the underlying causes of insecurity. They urged for enhanced intelligence gathering, improved coordination among security agencies, and the implementation of strategies aimed at restoring a tangible state presence in communities that are particularly vulnerable. “While we share in the joy of Oriile’s families, our celebrations won’t be complete until every abducted Nigerian is safely home,” the ADC concluded.
