Breaking Barriers in Leadership
Bukola Bakare has made her mark as a leader in a traditionally male-dominated sector. From her beginnings in the security industry to her ascent within the Rotary organization, she has consistently prioritized service over status. Now, as the first woman to serve as district governor of Rotary District 9111, Bakare is committed to making a lasting impact.
Launching Her Term with a Vision
On July 1, 2026, Bukola Bakare formally commenced her tenure as the inaugural female district governor of Rotary District 9111. In a letter to members, she articulated her vision centered on accessible leadership. Her priorities include fostering collaboration, transparency, and robust support for all clubs within the district.
A Journey Built on Responsibility
During her inauguration ceremony, Bakare underscored her determination to fulfill her leadership responsibilities. With only a handful of women having previously occupied the position of district governor in Nigerian Rotary clubs, her appointment reflects not only a historic achievement but also a renewal of her commitment to serve at a higher level. Since joining the Rotary Club in 2013, she has taken on numerous roles—from club secretary to club president and assistant governor.
Childhood Influences Shaping Leadership
Reflecting on her journey, Bakare emphasizes how her past experiences have shaped her leadership philosophy. “Looking back now, I see that every assignment and challenge prepared me for this moment,” she shared, highlighting her resilience. Her childhood was marked by adventurous curiosity and a strong sense of justice, qualities she attributes to her current leadership style.
A Passion for Understanding People and Society
Bakare’s academic pursuits in media, marketing, business administration, and criminology reveal her deep fascination with human behavior. She believes understanding people is essential for effective leadership in any context, whether in business or community service. Her studies in mass communication reinforced her understanding that effective communication is vital for connection and influence.
Redefining Security Leadership
As the CEO of Around ‘D’ Clock Security Company Limited, Bakare has become a rare figure in the Nigerian security landscape, where few women hold comparable positions. She recalls the misconceptions surrounding gender roles within her industry, noting that many initially expected a male leader. Despite their skepticism, she has demonstrated that competence and professionalism can overcome stereotypes.
A Call to Action for Rotary District 9111
Bakare’s journey into Rotary began unexpectedly. Invited to a meeting in 2013, she found herself drawn to the organization’s commitment to community service. Now, as she takes on the leadership of District 9111, Bakare is determined to address contemporary challenges, including mental health, youth unemployment, and climate change, while also aiming to raise $700,000 for The Rotary Foundation.
Most critically, she seeks to amplify Rotary’s narrative, sharing its impactful initiatives, such as the near eradication of polio and various community development projects. For Bakare, the measure of success is not just her groundbreaking role as the first female governor but the tangible changes in the lives of the communities she serves.
