Strengthening Collaboration in Defense Reporting
The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Defense Headquarters (DHQ), and the Defense Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) have united in a commitment to enhance cooperation aimed at fostering accurate defense reporting. This initiative seeks to combat misinformation and disinformation while bolstering public confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.
Partnership Agreement Reached
The new partnership was solidified during a series of courtesy visits on Sunday. Leaders from DECAN, including Secretary Odita, met with key figures such as the National Security Adviser, Dr. Chido Onuma, and the Director of Defense Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Samaira Uba, in Abuja.
Defining Strategic Goals
During the discussions, Mr. Odita emphasized the importance of the relationship between security agencies and defense correspondents as a strategic alliance aimed at enhancing national security through responsible journalism. He noted, “While our nation’s brave military protects the nation’s territorial integrity on the battlefield, we complement their efforts by informing, educating, and shaping the public’s understanding through accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting.”
Calls for Enhanced Access and Support
Mr. Odita advocated for increased access to official operations, regular operational briefings, and specialized training for defense correspondents. He also highlighted the need for dedicated media facilities for journalists covering security matters and urged for wider participation of the media in official operations.
Upcoming Magazine to Highlight Defense Activities
In addition, Mr. Odita announced that DECAN will launch a quarterly publication titled “Defense Correspondent” in October 2026, which will document the activities and achievements of the military and other defense agencies.
Recognition of Professionalism
In response, Dr. Onuma praised the professionalism of DECAN and recognized the critical role defense correspondents play in enhancing public awareness of national security issues. He assured the delegates that their requests would be presented to National Security Advisor Malam Nuhu Ribadu for consideration, emphasizing that continued capacity building will enable journalists to approach security reporting with heightened professionalism and accuracy.
The Importance of Responsible Journalism
Maj. Gen. Uba expressed congratulations to the newly elected DECAN executives, reinforcing the notion that responsible journalism is essential in the fight against misinformation, social media manipulation, and the misuse of artificial intelligence. He urged journalists to verify sensitive information through official military channels prior to publication, stating that responsible reporting is crucial for national security.
He warned that publishing sensitive military information could potentially compromise ongoing operations or assist terrorist groups. Uba acknowledged the efforts of defense correspondents in providing professional coverage of military activities, calling for ongoing cooperation in promoting peace, national unity, and security in Nigeria.
