Calls for Forensic Autopsy in Death of Minister’s Medical Team Member
The Ebonyi State Police Command, alongside the legal team representing David Umahi, the Minister of Labor, is advocating for a forensic autopsy to ascertain the cause of death of Mary Habila, a member of the Minister’s medical team. Habila passed away in Uburu, Ebonyi State, and the circumstances have raised significant concerns.
This tragic event unfolded on June 27 at the staff quarters located within Senator Umahi’s residence in Uburu, situated in the Ohaozara local government area. Habila, an employee at the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences (DUFUS) in Uburu, had been temporarily assigned to the Federal Ministry of Engineering.
According to Joshua Ukandu, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Ebonyi Special Administrative Region, officers at the Ohaozara police station responded to a medical emergency involving Habila and promptly transported her to the David Umahi Federal Teaching Hospital in Uburu, where she was pronounced dead.
Ukandu further stated that the Commissioner of Police has ordered the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a detailed inquiry. Initial investigations revealed that Habila was part of the minister’s medical team and had traveled with him to Uburu on the day of her death.
Investigators have already examined the scene and gathered statements from individuals associated with the case, as they strive to uncover the full circumstances surrounding Habila’s passing. A police spokesperson confirmed that preparations for a post-mortem examination are underway to clarify the cause of death.
