Division within the Niger State APC Sparks New Political Movement
The Niger State branch of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is facing significant internal discord, prompting the formation of the Niger State Salvation Movement (NSM). This new coalition draws together both former and current members of the party, reflecting a growing discontent among its membership.
Leadership and Support for the New Movement
The Niger State Salvation Movement is comprised of key figures, including former chiefs and special advisers to Governor Mohamed Umar Bago. The group claims to have garnered support from influential state elders, both men and women, underscoring its broad appeal.
Shifting Alliances in Niger State Politics
In a significant political maneuver, the NSM has expressed its intention to transition away from the APC, which has governed Niger State for over eleven years. Their goal is to align themselves with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recognized as the primary opposition party in the country.
Official Adoption of ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections
At a recent press conference held at the IBB Pen House, Alhaji Mikhail Alamin Emitshahi, a former federal lawmaker and chief of staff to ex-Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, announced the NSM’s formal affiliation with the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Emitshahi emphasized that this decision followed extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including leaders, youth, and women throughout Niger State.
Principles and Vision of the Niger State Salvation Movement
Emitshahi clarified that the movement’s decision was made not impulsively, but rather in consideration of the best interests of Niger State and its residents. He affirmed their commitment to a politics grounded in principle, inclusivity, and dedicated service. The NSM is driven by the belief that the people of Niger State deserve fundamental rights to safety, employment, education, healthcare, clean drinking water, and quality infrastructure, asserting that the ADC provides the optimal platform to advance these priorities.
Mobilization for Electoral Success
Emitshahi further noted that the movement plans to actively campaign across all wards, villages, and polling stations in Niger State. He assured that their strategy focuses on constructive campaign initiatives rather than divisive politics, declaring, “Our mission is to offer solutions for Niger State.” He called upon all members of the NSM, supporters, and well-meaning citizens to join this new political endeavor.
Response and Community Involvement
During the conference, Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Mamman Musa, highlighted the movement’s expansive reach across the 25 local governments in the state, confirming that they have a robust network of supporters in every community. He expressed confidence that this movement would propel voters toward electoral victory.
The ruling APC has yet to respond to these developments, leaving the political landscape in Niger State poised for potential shifts as the 2027 elections approach.
