NBC Advances Digital Television Transition
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is intensifying its efforts to accelerate the long-awaited transition from analog to digital television in Nigeria. This initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a seamless Digital Switchover (DSO) by 2028, when broadcasters will no longer be permitted to transmit analog signals.
Training Initiative for Set-Top Box Installers
Mrs. Clementine Usman Wamba, the Head of the DSO Department and Deputy Director of Public Relations at NBC, recently highlighted the organization’s capacity-building exercises, which aim to prepare technicians for the rollout of the country’s DSO programme. Over 50 set-top box installers and technicians were trained in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of this initiative.
Collaboration with NigComSat
Wamba noted that the current training effort is conducted in partnership with Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat). She emphasized the importance of skilled installers for the successful implementation of the DSO project. “Today’s training is part of a broader outreach to ensure that installers are equipped to track NigComSat signals effectively,” she explained. “With our recently launched Direct-To-Home (DTH) project, skilled technicians are critical for our advance into Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) and a forthcoming mobile app.”
Accessibility of Free Television
The initiative also aims to improve access to Free TV, allowing Nigerians to enjoy a wider variety of channels without the burden of subscription fees. NBC is proactively training installers nationwide to support the effective launch and installation of these decoders and satellite dishes.
The Need for Professional Installers
Wamba further elaborated on the technical complexities of installing digital equipment, stating, “To access the Free TV platform, professional installers are essential. Due to various technical requirements, individuals cannot set up the system independently and must rely on trained personnel to facilitate this access.”
Positive Reception from Trainees
Participants in the training program have expressed their gratitude for the government’s commitment to providing free television access and installation training. Raji Taohed Olanrewaju, a satellite installer, described the training as enlightening and crucial for job creation among Nigeria’s youth. He noted that free television would significantly benefit low-income households by offering them no-cost access to multiple channels.
Expanding Knowledge and Skillsets
Another trainee, Gbenga Orduro, emphasized the importance of the training in enhancing his understanding of the technology involved in installing digital decoders and dishes. Both Olanrewaju and Orduro highlighted the initiative as a positive step toward bridging the digital divide in Nigeria, enabling broader access to essential content and services.
