He expressed confidence in its capabilities, stating, “But from what I understand, in about a month, they’re going to send it out to get the most out of it.” However, he did not specify the details of the improvements planned.
Speculations about Aircraft Switch
Earlier this month, the President’s decision to return from the NATO summit in Turkey using a different presidential aircraft drew considerable media attention. This has led to speculation about the reasons behind rejecting the Qatar-donated jets and questions regarding the readiness of the new Air Force One.
White House Confirms Upgrade Timeline
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt clarified on Monday that President Trump would continue using the older Air Force One during the upcoming upgrade period. She confirmed that while the new aircraft is safe for travel, it will undergo significant enhancements, which are anticipated to take around a month.
Planned Upgrades Amid Security Concerns
A senior government official indicated that further upgrades are scheduled for September, although it remains unclear whether these will take place before or after Trump’s planned visit to Doonbeg for the Irish Open. The official hopes the President can make the trip, given the current security situation is deemed stable for domestic and European travel.
Safety Concerns and the Secret Service’s Advice
Earlier this month, Trump dismissed safety concerns as a factor in his choice to utilize an older Air Force One for his flight from Turkey. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the gravity of his situation, saying, “I’m number one on Iran’s kill list.” Reports have indicated that the Secret Service advised him to return on the older aircraft due to the geopolitical context and resurgent hostilities with Iran.
Increasing Scrutiny Surrounds New Aircraft
This month has also seen heightened scrutiny of the new Air Force One. Reports from The New York Times revealed that four of its journalists were subpoenaed by the Justice Department for covering safety issues related to the aircraft. The luxurious Boeing 747-8, which was gifted by the Qatari royal family last year, is set to be a temporary solution until the long-awaited next-generation Air Force One is delivered, projected for 2028.
