ECOWAS Elects New Leadership Amid Regional Challenges
In a significant development for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Bashir Diomai Fay of Senegal has been elected to chair the Commission on the Powers of Heads of State. This decision was made during the 69th Ordinary General Assembly held in Lungi, Sierra Leone. President Fay succeeds Sierra Leone’s Julius Maada Bio, who officially concluded his chairmanship at the assembly.
The summit convened heads of state and government to address vital political, security, and economic issues impacting the sub-region, with an emphasis on strengthening cooperation among member states. According to a post-summit statement, the key focus was to foster closer ties amid emerging challenges at both regional and global levels.
A pivotal outcome of the meeting was a high-level dialogue regarding the future of regional integration in West Africa. Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhanced political, economic, and institutional collaboration, highlighting the need for a united approach to tackle prevalent issues across the region.
Furthermore, the assembly adopted a Declaration of Commitment aimed at reinforcing cooperation for the Future of Regional Integration in West Africa. This pledge signifies an effort to deepen collaboration and promote collective prosperity among member nations.
In a move to bolster regional infrastructure, leaders endorsed the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) concerning the Africa Atlantic Gas Pipeline (AAGP) project. This initiative is anticipated to significantly improve energy security, enhance cross-border infrastructure, and stimulate economic growth in the involved countries.
Additionally, the summit saw the adoption of a Presidential Declaration aimed at promoting gender equality in political representation within ECOWAS member states. As part of activities commemorating the Community’s 50th anniversary, this initiative seeks to enhance women’s participation in political leadership and decision-making processes in the region.
Moreover, the appointment of General Birameh Diop from Senegal as chair of the ECOWAS Commission was approved, with plans for him to assume office on September 1, 2026. He will succeed Gambia’s current Chairman, Dr. Omar Aliu Touray, whose four-year term will conclude at that time.
During the assembly, various reports were reviewed, including the 2026 Interim Report on the Status of the Region and other pertinent issues related to policy, governance, and security. This leadership alteration occurs during a critical juncture for ECOWAS, as the organization faces security threats, democratic transitions, and intensified economic integration, especially following the earlier withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
With President Fay serving as the rotating chair and General Diop set to lead the commission come September, ECOWAS aims to bolster its efforts in strengthening regional institutions while promoting peace, security, and enhanced economic integration across West Africa.
