Police Officers Detained for Extortion in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended four officers accused of illegally extorting N53,000 from Dr. Musa Aliyu (SAN), the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC). This incident occurred during an unlawful search operation in Abuja.
Officers Accused of Abandoning Duties for Illegal Checkpoints
FCT Police Commissioner Ahmed Sanusi described the arrested officers as criminals whose actions have tarnished the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. He explained that the officers had abandoned their assigned responsibilities and gathered at the Vanex area of Ouse, where they reportedly established unauthorized checkpoints to extort money from unsuspecting motorists, including the ICPC chairman.
Details of the Extortion Incident
According to Sanusi, the officers coerced Dr. Aliyu into withdrawing N53,000 via a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, demanding that he also cover the transaction fees. They then divided the stolen funds among themselves.
Investigation Uncovers a Pattern of Criminal Behavior
A preliminary investigation revealed that the officers had conspired to create what they referred to as an extortion group, abandoning their legal duties to carry out this illicit operation. Sanusi noted that the officers convened at Vanex to unlawfully set up a checkpoint to execute these criminal activities.
Swift Action Following the Confession of a Group Leader
Following the confession of the group’s leader, internal investigators initiated a search for the remaining members. Commissioner Sanusi stated, “We have identified and arrested all suspects involved. We are committed to ensuring that those found guilty face strict disciplinary action, and those deserving of dismissal will certainly be dismissed.”
Reinforcement of Citizens’ Rights and Police Accountability
Sanusi reiterated the Inspector General of Police’s directive against indiscriminate searches of citizens’ mobile phones and cautioned officers not to infringe upon individual rights. He encouraged citizens to refuse any unlawful searches and to report such incidents to the emergency police line.

The Commissioner urged residents of the FCT to report all instances of extortion, harassment, and police misconduct. He assured the community that the command remains dedicated to taking disciplinary action against errant personnel in an effort to restore public trust in the police force.
