Investigation Continues into Nolan Wells’ Death
An independent preliminary autopsy report commissioned by the legal team of Nolan Wells’ family has indicated that his cause and manner of death are still under investigation. While the family’s attorney, Ben Crump, addressed the findings at the 117th NAACP National Convention in Chicago, he emphasized that the doctor performing the autopsy could not dismiss the potential for foul play.
Key Findings of the Autopsy Report
Crump revealed that an additional report, conducted after two autopsies, noted a red discoloration on the back of Wells’ head. However, he pointed out significant gaps in the findings, attributed to missing body parts and incomplete procedures. “This is just another piece of the puzzle, and while it provides important information, there are still more questions than answers at this point,” Crump stated.
Expert Conducted Autopsy Lacks Toxicology Results
Dr. Roger Mitchell, a board-certified forensic pathologist and president of the American Medical Association, was responsible for the autopsy. Notably, the examination did not include a toxicology report, an aspect Crump flagged as crucial. The autopsy was performed on July 10, a week after Wells disappeared and four days after his body was discovered off the northwest coast of Horn Island.
Authorities Await State Autopsy Results
The Jackson County coroner also conducted an autopsy on Wells, though those results remain unpublicized as they await the completion of the toxicology analysis. Coroner Bruce Lind confirmed to NBC News that the state’s report is still incomplete.
Unresolved Questions Surround Wells’ Fatal Fall
Mitchell’s report stated he could not ascertain whether Wells was conscious when he entered the water or how he fell in. Crump described this uncertainty as “the crux of the matter,” advocating for clarity around the cause and manner of death. Mitchell was unable to directly assess the condition of Wells’ lungs, as prior procedures had removed and dissected essential organs.
Parents Demand Accountability
Wells’ parents, Christine Wells-Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley, voiced their concerns at the NAACP convention, calling for transparency regarding their son’s death. “There are many people asking questions. Our only question is: What happened to our son?” Wells-Wonsley expressed, highlighting their decision to pursue an independent autopsy due to the lack of information from authorities.
Community Support and Calls for Justice
Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton, former NFL player Terrell Owens, and actor Tyler Perry have collectively offered $125,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for Wells’ death. Meanwhile, despite conflicting reports regarding Wells’ attire when found, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his tragic end. A funeral service was held for Wells in his hometown of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, marking a poignant moment of remembrance for his family and community.
