Madison Police Chief John Patterson held a news conference stating that authorities received a call around 1 p.m. regarding a person inspecting a parked car in the Marquette District. The suspect attempted to flee on a bicycle, but officers managed to encounter him again approximately 35 minutes later.

According to Chief Patterson, during the ensuing struggle, the man either fell off his bike or was dismounted by an officer. A confrontation at the intersection followed, during which the individual reportedly produced a knife that injured officers as they tried to effectuate his arrest.
