Minister Launches Sustainable Waste Management Initiative at Nigerian Airports
Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has officially inaugurated the first phase of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Sustainable Waste Management Program. The announcement took place during an inspection of the newly upgraded Pilgrim Terminal at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Keyamo, accompanied by notable figures including FAAN Board Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the Authority’s Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku, highlighted the innovative waste management initiative. This program introduces color-coded recycling bins aimed at promoting effective waste segregation, marking a significant step forward in the goal of making Nigeria’s airports more environmentally friendly and efficient.
The minister emphasized that this initiative is just the beginning of a nationwide effort to enhance environmental practices at airports throughout the country. He noted that it underscores FAAN’s dedication to fostering a cleaner atmosphere at airports.
Following the inauguration, Keyamo toured the revamped Pilgrim Terminal, which boasts a range of improvements. These include a spacious 300-seat passenger waiting area, state-of-the-art VIP lounges, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and improved security systems, all designed to enhance passenger experience.
Keyamo commended FAAN’s management for their work on the projects and urged them to maintain their progress in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Hope Agenda. FAAN, in a subsequent statement, endorsed the waste management initiative as crucial for creating cleaner, greener, and sustainable airports across Nigeria.
Officials from FAAN have appealed to passengers and airport visitors to support the initiative by utilizing the designated recycling bins. They emphasized that even small actions can collectively lead to substantial changes. “While traveling, your small actions make a big difference. Please dispose of your waste in the appropriate bins, support recycling and help create an airport environment that we can all be proud of,” the authority stated.
These developments come as the Federal Government continues its drive to modernize airport infrastructure and elevate service levels across Nigeria’s aviation sector. The Pilgrim Terminal at MMIA, a key departure point for Muslim pilgrims heading to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah, is set to benefit from these enhancements, improving comfort and security during peak travel periods.
