Government Commends Efforts to Safeguard National Sovereignty
Efforts by the Chief of Army Staff and military officials to uphold Nigeria’s sovereignty have received commendation. This recognition highlights the critical role these entities play in the complex landscape of national security.
Two-Phase Implementation of Army Expansion Planned
The Nigerian Army is poised for significant expansion, with a plan to increase its divisions from eight to twelve. This initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu, aims to bolster the country’s security framework and enhance military operational efficiency. The reorganization will unfold in two phases, completing by September and December of this year.
Military Expansion Aimed at Strengthening National Defense
According to Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, this expansion underscores the President’s unwavering commitment to equipping the military to tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. The initiative is part of a broader government effort to fortify national defense capabilities, reflecting a serious approach to ensuring peace and stability in the region.
Strategic Location of Divisions Across Nigeria
The new structure will see the establishment of twelve divisions, located strategically across Nigeria. These include: 1 Division Headquarters in Kaduna, covering states like Kano and Katsina; 2 Division Headquarters in Ibadan for Oyo and Osun states; and others distributed throughout the country. Each division is designed to enhance local operational effectiveness and readiness.
Enhancing Command and Control with New Divisions
The establishment of divisions in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City will play a pivotal role in improving command and control structures. By decentralizing operational decision-making, the military aims to strengthen border security, protect vital national infrastructure, and enhance counter-insurgency operations. This proactive approach will also ensure quicker military responses to emerging threats.
Implementation Timeline Set for New Structure
The transition into the new military structure will occur in two distinct phases. The first phase will focus on creating the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions, alongside restructuring existing formations, targeted for completion by September 2026. The second phase will introduce the 83rd Division and include further restructuring, aimed for completion by December 2026.
