Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau Launches Inquiry into Enugu Air Incident
The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into a runway excursion involving an Enugu Air flight that occurred at Benin Airport in Edo State on Thursday. The agency aims to thoroughly understand the factors contributing to this event.
The incident was reported shortly after all 63 passengers and five crew members on Flight 4264, an Embraer E170 traveling from Lagos to Benin, safely exited the aircraft following its veer off the runway upon landing. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities.
In their official statement, the NSIB confirmed the rapid deployment of a Go team to Benin Airport after learning of the situation. Investigators have begun the critical processes required to ascertain the cause of the incident, including the preservation of evidence, interviews with flight crew and witnesses, aircraft examination, and assessment of runway conditions.
The bureau has also ensured that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and relevant airport authorities are informed, and the aircraft has been secured to facilitate the investigation.
NSIB Executive Highlights Need for Independent Review
NSIB Executive Director Alex Badet Jr. underscored the importance of a rigorous and independent investigation into any runway excursion. “While we are relieved that there were no injuries, such incidents call for comprehensive scrutiny to prevent future occurrences,” said Badet.
The investigating team arrived at the scene almost immediately after receiving the notification, demonstrating their preparedness and commitment to aviation safety. Badet urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation adheres to international standards.
According to NSIB, an interim report will be released within 30 days to comply with regulatory requirements, while a comprehensive final report, including findings and safety recommendations, will follow upon completion of the investigation. Badet stressed the importance of safety within the aviation community and encouraged all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the inquiry.
Details of the Incident Released by Enugu Air
In a statement, Enugu Air reassured that all passengers and crew members exited the aircraft safely. Initially characterizing the incident as a runway incursion, subsequent video evidence revealed that the Embraer E170 had exited the runway and ended up on a grassy area, leading to its reclassification as a runway excursion.
Enugu Air has initiated an assessment of the aircraft and cautioned that some scheduled flights may see temporary disruptions as a result of this incident.
Impact on Flight Operations at Benin Airport
The runway excursion has also affected flight operations at Benin Airport. Following the incident, Air Peace announced the suspension of all flights to and from the airport, attributing the disruption to the temporary closure of the runway. The airline has expressed its apologies to affected passengers while airport authorities work diligently to restore normal operations.
