Nigerian Army Expansion Approved by President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has announced a significant expansion of the Nigerian Army, increasing the number of divisions from eight to twelve and sanctioning the recruitment of an additional 28,000 personnel. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance Nigeria’s security architecture and bolster military operational capabilities.
Official Announcement and Strategic Objectives
The approval was conveyed in a statement on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Assistant to the President on Intelligence and Strategy. According to the Office of the President, this expansion aims to enhance the military’s command structure and operational efficiency, enabling more effective responses to evolving security threats across the nation.
Commitment to National Defense
The statement underscored Tinubu’s steadfast commitment to equipping the military to effectively confront Nigeria’s changing security landscape. It highlighted ongoing investments by the Tinubu administration in critical military assets, troop welfare improvements, operational readiness upgrades, and modernization initiatives.
New Divisions and Their Locations
The restructuring will introduce four new divisions, thereby increasing the total from eight to twelve. Notable new headquarters include the 5th Division in Makurdi, which will oversee Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi states; the 9th Division in Ilorin, which will be responsible for Kwara and Niger states; the 10th Division in Jalingo, looking after Taraba and Adamawa states; and the 83rd Division in Benin City, covering Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states.
Enhancements to Operational Efficiency
Existing divisions will maintain their current jurisdictions, which encompass regions such as Kaduna, Kano, and Borno states, among others. The establishment of additional divisions is designed to decentralize operational decision-making, strengthen command-and-control protocols, enhance border security, and improve the safeguarding of critical national infrastructure.
Implementation Timeline
The rollout of the new military structure will occur over two stages. The first phase, comprising the establishment of the 5th, 9th, and 10th Divisions and reorganization of existing formations, is slated for completion by September 2026. The second phase, which includes the establishment of the 83rd Division and further structural changes, is expected to conclude by December 2026.

President Tinubu also expressed appreciation for the professionalism and dedication shown by Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Widi Ibrahim Shuaib and the entire Nigerian Armed Forces. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to consistently invest in the military to ensure a well-equipped and motivated force capable of defending the country against both internal and external threats.
