Former state Senate President Troy Jackson is officially the Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine, initiating a crucial 101-day countdown to the election. This race has garnered significant national attention and is deemed essential for the Democratic Party.
On Saturday morning, hundreds of Democrats assembled in Bangor for a state convention aimed at selecting a Senate candidate. This gathering followed the suspension of primary winner Graham Platner’s campaign earlier this month due to allegations of sexual assault, allegations he denies.
Jackson, a seasoned lawmaker, was widely anticipated to secure the nomination after a strong delegate field at last weekend’s county meeting, where his main rivals withdrew from the race. The urgency surrounding this election underscores the Democratic Party’s commitment to advancing to the general election.
Maine Democratic Party Chairman Charlie Dingman welcomed the delegates, declaring, “With a sigh of relief, I officially call this convention to order.” He went on to reveal that Jackson received all but five of the 571 votes cast, prompting a euphoric response from the crowd, who chanted his name in celebration.
The unfolding events have reshaped the Senate race in Maine, where incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins seeks a sixth term. His campaign recently reported raising over $600,000 in just 72 hours, bringing his total to more than $1 million since launching his candidacy in July. As Jackson tries to build momentum, outside support from Democratic groups previously distancing themselves from the race may return. Democratic Senate Campaign Committee Chair Kirsten Gillibrand expressed enthusiasm for Maine’s prospects, stating that the committee would back the Democratic nominee after the primary concluded.
Despite this potential support, Republicans have intensified attacks on Jackson, scrutinizing his lengthy tenure as a state representative and his ties to Platner.
