Government Sets Out Plans for Engaging Overseas Health Professionals
On Friday, President Bola Tinubu announced initiatives aimed at establishing a permanent framework to engage Nigerian health professionals abroad. This announcement coincided with the National Assembly’s commitment to support the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative (DHII), reinforcing the importance of discrete voting.
National Diaspora Day Highlights Contributions of Nigerians Abroad
The pledges were made during the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebrations held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event gathered government officials, parliamentarians, healthcare providers, and diaspora organizations, who collectively recognized the critical role of Nigeria’s overseas medical workforce in addressing the nation’s enduring health challenges.
Leveraging Expertise for National Development
The ceremony, organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), focused on the theme “Leveraging Global Diaspora Health Expertise to Strengthen Regional Health Systems for National Development.” President Tinubu urged Nigerian doctors, nurses, researchers, and public health professionals overseas to actively participate in rebuilding the healthcare system back home, committing to institutional mechanisms that would facilitate their contributions and innovations.
Promoting the Diaspora as National Assets
Describing the diaspora as a source of national pride, Tinubu emphasized their global impact, stating, “Around the world, Nigerian doctors, nurses, and public health leaders save lives and shape healthcare.” He commended NiDCOM, headed by Abike Dabiri Erewa, for enhancing Nigeria’s engagement with expatriates and fostering opportunities for contributing to national development.
Collaboration with Professional Bodies and Stakeholders
In his remarks, the President acknowledged the contributions of various professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Association of Nigerian Doctors in the United Kingdom (MANSAG-UK). He highlighted the significance of the Diaspora Healthcare Impact Initiative, which mobilizes these professionals globally to support healthcare delivery within Nigeria.
Tackling Health Sector Challenges with Global Support
President Tinubu admitted that the health sector faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and lack of skilled human resources, and he stressed that international collaboration is crucial to overcoming these obstacles. Plans were announced to expand diaspora medicine initiatives in underserved communities and to enhance telemedicine services that connect overseas experts with local patients and healthcare workers.
Legislative Backing for Diaspora Health Initiatives
Tochukwu Okere, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs, assured participants of the National Assembly’s strong legislative support for these initiatives. He called for deeper partnerships involving universities and teaching hospitals in Nigeria to create collaborative research and training programs that leverage the expertise of diaspora health professionals.
