Ango Abdullahi Critiques Northern Nigeria’s Leadership and Values
President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly in the northern region, will soon be addressed. He highlighted that his administration is committed to taking decisive measures against criminal organizations across the nation. This assertion comes alongside warnings from Professor Ango Abdullahi, the Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum and former Vice-Chancellor of Zaria’s Ahmadu Bello University, who lamented the decline of moral and leadership values that historically defined Northern Nigeria. He emphasized that the escalating issues of insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment in the region are linked to a departure from the foundational principles established by the country’s early leaders.
Sultan Advocates for Repentance Among Wrongdoers
In a parallel development, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Excellency Muhammadu Saad Abubakar, called for divine intervention to inspire genuine repentance from those committing wrongs in Nigeria. These comments were made during the 3rd General Hassan Usman Katsina Memorial Lecture, themed “From Sacrifice to Strategy: Rekindling General Hassan Usman Katsina’s Vision for Prosperity in Northern Nigeria,” held at Arewa House in Kaduna. During the event, President Tinubu, represented by his Special Adviser on Political and Other Affairs, Ibrahim Masari, honored the late General Katsina, recognizing him as an embodiment of humility, discipline, and patriotism.

President Tinubu recounted that General Katsina, who served as the military governor of the former Northern Region and later as Chief of Army Staff, played a crucial role in fostering national unity at a pivotal time in Nigeria’s history. The President remarked that General Katsina’s unwavering dedication to the country’s unity laid the groundwork for the democracy and freedoms that Nigerians enjoy today. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security while also preserving the legacies of Nigeria’s historical leaders.
Initiatives for Education and Infrastructure in the North
The President elaborated on the various initiatives his administration is implementing to bolster education, infrastructure, transportation, and energy in the northern region, as well as other parts of the country. “With the grace of Allah, the security challenges confronting us, particularly in northern Nigeria, will soon be alleviated as we work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of our nation,” he stated. This commitment aligns with broader efforts to address the systemic issues that have plagued the region.
Declining Values Impacting Northern Nigeria’s Progress
During the memorial lecture, Professor Abdullahi and political economist Dr. Usman Bugadje shared their observations on the challenges facing Northern Nigeria. Abdullahi criticized the region’s loss of values, citing that its historical virtues of discipline, integrity, and patriotism have diminished significantly. He stated that while many northern cities may have physically expanded, the moral foundations that once characterized the region’s leaders have been compromised. Abdullahi attributed the stagnation of Northern Nigeria to this loss of values and urged the region’s citizens to look to the legacy of leaders like General Katsina for inspiration.
Calls for Practical Solutions to Northern Nigeria’s Problems
Bugadje, delivering the keynote address, echoed Abdullahi’s sentiments regarding the economic and social decline in Northern Nigeria. He highlighted that the region is grappling with a multiplicity of challenges, including decreasing food production, rising poverty, and collapsing education and healthcare systems. Bugadje criticized the complacency of the northern elite, noting that mere lamentation about these issues without actionable solutions reveals deeper systemic problems. He questioned the leadership absence, urging for a re-examination of the region’s elite who are tasked with addressing these critical issues.
Sultan Appeals for Divine Guidance in Nigeria’s Governance
In related remarks, the Sultan of Sokoto emphasized the need for leaders to seek divine guidance to motivate true repentance among wrongdoers in Nigeria. During a meeting with First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at his palace, he acknowledged her efforts through the Renewal Hope Initiative, which has positively impacted many Nigerians. He reiterated his hope that those engaged in wrongful acts would genuinely repent and find a path toward righteousness.
