YPP Presidential Candidate Urges National Assembly to Investigate Budget Implementation
Hon. Julius Olajide Filani, the presidential candidate for the Youth Progressive Party (YPP), has called on the National Assembly to thoroughly investigate the implementation of the 2025 and 2026 national budgets. In a statement released in Abuja, Filani underscored the need for accountability in public finance and compliance with appropriations laws.
Calls for Legislative Oversight
In light of recent remarks by Senate leader Senator Tahir Monguno regarding challenges in executing the 2025 budget, Filani has emphasized the importance of congressional scrutiny. He argued that the issues brought to light during discussions with Senate members and the economic executive team warrant a detailed examination by lawmakers.
Urgent Attention Needed for Budget Concerns
Filani expressed that the concerns surrounding the budgets for 2025 and 2026 are pressing and require immediate legislative action. “Parliament must ensure that the approved budget is implemented in accordance with the law and that public funds are properly accounted for,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of these matters.
Investigation of Budget Execution Process Advocated
The YPP leader is advocating for a comprehensive review of the budget implementation processes. He insisted that the National Assembly must uphold the Nigerian Constitution through a full-scale investigation into any discrepancies in budget execution, ensuring that the interests of the public are protected.
Questioning Rollovers and Security Allocations
Filani also raised concerns about the rollover of budgetary provisions from the fiscal year 2025 into 2026, noting that a staggering 70 percent of the 2025 spending plan is being carried over. This situation raises serious questions about budget execution efficacy and the demand for greater accountability from government agencies. Furthermore, he highlighted the allocations for security agencies, particularly in capital expenditures, amid the ongoing security challenges in the country.
Transparency in Revenue Management Required
The YPP candidate called for increased scrutiny of revenue management by relevant security agencies, emphasizing the need to verify whether approved allocations have been fully utilized. He referred to recent discussions involving the Senate and the Economic Executive Team, which indicated discrepancies in revenue collection and distribution via the Federal Accounting Allocation Committee (FAAC). “I would like to join Senator Monguno in calling for greater clarity on the situation surrounding the federation’s revenue management,” Filani stated.
Importance of Civic Engagement Ahead of Elections
Filani also warned that poor budget implementation and lack of fiscal transparency could undermine investor confidence and lead to economic instability. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in the political process as the 2027 general elections approach. This election, according to Filani, presents an opportunity for citizens to demand improved fiscal responsibility and effective governance from their leaders.
