Presidency Critiques Peter Obi’s Channels TV Interview
The Office of the President has sharply criticized Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), following his recent interview on Channels TV. The administration labeled his appearance as a “public relations disaster,” accusing him of misrepresenting facts regarding his political career and the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.
Misleading Comparisons Highlighted
Bayo Onanuga, Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy, took to X on Monday to assert that Obi’s interview failed to bolster his diminishing aspirations for the 2027 presidential election. According to Onanuga, Obi made misleading comparisons between his own political journey and that of President Bola Tinubu.
Defending Tinubu’s Political Continuity
Onanuga argued that unlike Obi, who has shifted between parties for personal gain, Tinubu has maintained a consistent ideological path since entering politics in 1991. He traced Tinubu’s political evolution from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the Democratic Alliance (AD), the Action Congress (AC), and finally the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Accusations of Political Opportunism
Onanuga charged that Obi had repeatedly changed political parties to chase his ambitions instead of contributing to their development. “Rather than building something, you always want to reap where you didn’t sow,” he stated, referencing Obi’s transitions from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and to the Labor Party (LP).
Refusal to Acknowledge Election Outcome
Additionally, the presidential aide condemned Obi for persistently claiming victory in the 2023 election despite a Supreme Court decision affirming Tinubu’s win. “Peter, you lost. You did not win that election. You came in third place,” Onanuga asserted, urging Obi to confront the reality of his defeat.
Pledges of National Interest
In his defense during the Channels TV interview, Obi maintained that his cross-party movement was motivated by national interest rather than personal gain. He reiterated his ongoing belief that the outcome of the 2023 presidential election did not reflect the will of the Nigerian populace, a stance he has held since contesting the election results in both the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
