China Commits to Global Development Goals
China has reiterated its commitment to fulfilling its role as a global power by promoting inclusive development, enhancing multilateral collaboration, and assisting developing nations in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key Remarks from Chinese Foreign Minister
During a high-level meeting of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi articulated this resolve. He emphasized that the GDI, which was launched by President Xi Jinping at the 76th United Nations General Assembly in 2021, has transformed from a national proposal into a broadly supported international platform aimed at fostering global development.
Progress of the Global Development Initiative
Wang noted that the initiative has progressed from aspirational goals to tangible actions that support the implementation of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He highlighted that over 130 countries and international organizations either support or participate in GDI collaborations, with nearly 100 countries and regional organizations having signed cooperation agreements with China as part of this initiative.
Financial Mobilization and Community Impact
Highlighting the initiative’s impact, Wang reported that China has mobilized over $23 billion through various financing mechanisms, including the China-United Nations Peace and Development Fund and the World Development and South-South Cooperation Fund. These funds have enabled more than 1,800 community-focused development projects and have provided professional training to over 200,000 people worldwide.
Flagship Programs Demonstrate Tangible Benefits
The Foreign Minister cited several flagship programs that illustrate the initiative’s positive impact, including the Juncao technology aimed at poverty alleviation, the Sustainable Development Science Satellite-1 (SDGSAT-1) for global data sharing, and the MAZU platform designed for weather forecasting and disaster risk reduction. He emphasized that these initiatives have delivered real benefits to populations in more than 120 countries.
Call for Enhanced International Cooperation
Wang urged the international community to prioritize development amidst increasing global uncertainties, widening inequality, and persistent development disparities between developed and developing nations. He outlined four critical priorities for advancing global development: fostering international solidarity, accelerating the implementation of the SDGs through increased financing, bridging the digital divide, and reforming global economic systems.
China’s Role in Global Cooperation
As a responsible developing nation, China aims to continue sharing financial resources, technology, and developmental expertise through various partnerships. Wang announced that China, alongside 28 other countries, has recently established the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) to enhance global cooperation on AI, positioning China as a leader in innovation and knowledge sharing.
Emphasis on Fair Economic Reforms
The Foreign Minister called for reforms tailored to make the global economic and financial system more equitable and responsive to the needs of developing countries, urging developed nations to fulfill their development financing pledges. He stressed that the forthcoming United Nations discussions on the post-2030 global development agenda should better reflect the priorities of countries in the Global South.
