Federal Agencies Intensify Efforts to Enforce Consumer Rights
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), in collaboration with the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has intensified measures to address unfair market practices. This initiative emphasizes the vital importance of price tagging, product labeling, and the obligations related to returns and refunds.
This renewed focus was unveiled during a stakeholder meeting held on Wednesday in Ikeja, Lagos. The agencies are striving for greater adherence to consumer protection laws through constructive dialogue with businesses.
At the event, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello underscored that building consumer confidence is essential for a thriving marketplace. This is particularly important in Lagos, a bustling hub where countless transactions occur daily across markets, supermarkets, shopping centers, and online platforms.
Bello, who represented South West Coordinator Olubumi Otti, highlighted that these business transactions not only foster economic growth and job creation but also thrive on trust between consumers and enterprises. “Consumers must be assured that the price they see is the price they will pay,” he stated, stressing the need for transparent communication regarding product information and consumer rights.
Importance of Compliance
Bello emphasized that the FCCPC’s role extends beyond simply reminding businesses of their legal obligations; it aims to clarify how compliance fosters mutual benefits for consumers and companies. The agency believes that engagement, rather than confrontation, yields better results, as businesses are more inclined to adhere to regulations when they are well-informed.
Despite these efforts, the FCCPC continues to receive complaints from consumers about avoidable market practices. Bello pointed out that price visibility is a fundamental aspect of fairness. “Consumers should be aware of a product’s price before making a purchasing decision. It’s unacceptable for customers to be charged different prices based solely on the seller’s discretion,” he remarked.
Collaborative Efforts Toward Consumer Protection
Afolabi Sholebo, General Manager of LASCOPA, reiterated the initiative’s shared mission to cultivate fairness and transparency in markets. He noted that some companies have faced sanctions for practices such as failing to display prices, selling expired goods, mislabeling products, and denying legitimate return or refund requests.
Legal Obligations Under Consumer Protection Laws
Sholebo further stated that compliance with price regulations, labeling standards, and consumer redress mechanisms is mandated under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2018, as well as the Lagos State Consumer Protection Act. This initiative is also part of larger efforts by the FCCPC to enhance consumer protection.
In recent months, the commission has escalated its actions against businesses accused of predatory pricing, deceptive trade practices, and violations of consumer rights. It continues to urge companies to comply with federal regulations by transparently displaying prices, providing accurate product information, and honoring consumers’ rights to remedies outlined by law. The FCCPC remains committed to fostering a transparent, fair, and trustworthy marketplace in Nigeria.
