In the weeks preceding the departure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians were taken aback by the announcement of a new Nigeria Airways. The initiative, deemed questionable from its inception, has raised serious concerns regarding its design and potential impact on the nation’s economy.

The recent choice of Ethiopian Airlines as the majority stakeholder—holding a 50% share—has prompted alarm among observers. This unprecedented arrangement flouts conventional norms, where national carriers are typically owned predominantly by their home nations. By allowing a foreign airline to hold such a substantial stake in what is touted as Nigeria’s national carrier, the previous administration has set a concerning precedent.
The Missed Opportunity for Local Airlines
Despite the existence of domestic airlines like Air Peace, which boasts significant experience and a proven track record of international operations, the Buhari administration overlooked these local entities in favor of foreign interests. Air Peace has previously facilitated the evacuation of Nigerians from crisis-hit regions, showcasing its capability to serve as a national airline. Nonetheless, its contributions were dismissed, leading to questions about the government’s rationale.
