Tuchel Confirms Saka’s Readiness Amid Injury Concerns
England manager Thomas Tuchel has assured fans that Bukayo Saka is “in no pain” and fully “ready” to participate in the team’s crucial final group match against Panama, despite injury concerns surrounding defender Reece James.
Saka started England’s first two World Cup matches on the bench against Croatia and Ghana, only entering the fray in the second half. This was attributed to a long-standing Achilles tendon issue that had hampered his preparations at Arsenal throughout the season.
Tuchel indicated that Saka had returned to his usual form after undergoing extensive medical evaluations, which included consultations with his club, Arsenal. “For Bukayo, not starting was the right decision,” Tuchel noted. “We collaborated closely with him and Arsenal’s medical team to ensure he could regain his strength.”
The England manager confirmed that Saka is now free of pain and discomfort. “After several days of recovery, he is in top condition and prepared to contribute,” he added.
James to Miss Panama Match Due to Injury
In contrast, Tuchel revealed that defender Reece James will miss the upcoming match due to a “minor hamstring problem.” His availability for the round of 32 remains uncertain, although he has not been completely ruled out.
Defensive Options for Tuchel Following Injury Concerns
With James sidelined, Tuchel has identified Jed Spence, Jarrell Quansah, and Ezri Konsa as potential replacements. He faced questions regarding the selection of centre-back Trevor Chalobah over a natural right-back, especially following a severe injury to full-back Tino Livramento earlier this month.
The decision to call up Chalobah stems from the plan to allow Quansah to step into the full-back position, which Tuchel believes suits his skill set. “I observed Chalobah perform exceptionally at Liverpool, and he has also excelled in a back three at Leverkusen,” Tuchel stated. “While we regret losing Reece, we are focused on finding a solution.”
Injury Updates: Rice and Anderson Expected to Start
Reports prior to the match suggested that Elliott Anderson might miss the game due to a muscle strain. Nevertheless, Tuchel confirmed that both Anderson and Declan Rice participated in full training, allowing them to be considered for starting roles against Panama. Rice notably had been nursing a calf issue sustained during the match against Ghana but has now returned to full fitness.
However, Rice is just one yellow card away from a suspension that could sideline him during the knockout stages. “Yes and no” was Tuchel’s reply when asked if the yellow card situation would influence his selection. “Declan is an experienced player and knows how to manage these risks,” he remarked.
Addressing Transfer Speculations Surrounding Anderson
In other news, Tuchel briefly addressed the swirling rumors regarding Anderson’s potential transfer to Manchester City, reported to be a record deal valued at ÂŁ116 million. He emphasized that Anderson has maintained focus and professionalism despite the speculation.
The manager reiterated, “We worked hard to keep the player’s attention on training and preparation, ensuring he was ready for the upcoming match. Our priority is winning and securing our position in the tournament, not the transfer market.” He acknowledged the reality of ongoing transfers in football and confirmed that discussions surrounding Anderson’s future would be managed post-match.
