INEC Appoints Major Agbo as New Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally designated Major Agbo as the new national chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), succeeding Bala Yusuf amid ongoing factional disputes. This announcement was made during a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday.
Leadership Transition Confirmed by INEC
An independent investigation confirmed that Mr. Agbo’s name has been updated on the INEC portal, officially recognizing him as the party’s national chairman. The INEC also updated the records to reflect the new members of the NNPP’s national working committee, including National Secretary Olapoji Ogini, National Treasurer Adetoise Omokanye, and National Legal Adviser Asukwo Iboku.
Significance of the Recent Developments
This leadership change comes at a pivotal time for the NNPP, which has faced internal divisions since the 2023 general elections, with rival factions vying for control of the party. Agbo’s appointment represents a crucial moment in the ongoing evolution of the party’s leadership.
Agbo’s Vision for the Party
In a statement to the media, Agbo hailed the recent updates to the INEC portal as a clear endorsement of his leadership. He emphasized that this development not only validates the current leadership but also positions the party to effectively prepare for future political challenges. Agbo expressed optimism, stating, “The days of betrayal of trust are over,” and extended well-wishes to former leaders Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima in their future political pursuits.
Preparations for the 2027 Elections
Mr. Agbo also outlined the party’s proactive steps toward the 2027 general elections, following the official confirmation of the new leadership by INEC. “We have initiated the process to upload candidates for the 2027 elections in compliance with INEC guidelines after receiving our access code,” he explained. He assured that the party aims to field capable and credible candidates dedicated to promoting good governance and national development.
Calls for Collaboration on Security Issues
In addition to discussing electoral plans, Agbo called for enhanced collaboration among various stakeholders to address the pressing security challenges in Nigeria. He urged the Federal Government and security agencies to improve intelligence operations and inter-agency cooperation to restore peace and safeguard citizens’ lives. “We must work together to effectively tackle insecurity,” he stressed.
Ensuring Fair Elections
Agbo also urged INEC to remain committed to delivering fair, credible, and transparent elections in the upcoming cycle. He expressed that the public’s trust in the democratic process relies heavily on the integrity and professionalism of the electoral body, as well as the judges overseeing the elections.
Factional Chairman Responds to Changes
When reached for comment, Bala Yusuf, the factional national chairman of the NNPP, acknowledged the leadership transition but indicated he wasn’t in a position to provide further details at this time. “Yes, I understand. However, I don’t have time to discuss it in detail,” he stated, indicating his intention to issue a more comprehensive statement upon his return to Abuja.
