Jigawa Assembly Suspends Auyo Legislative Council Chairman for Anti-Party Activities
The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended Haruna Maigari, the Chairman of the Auyo Legislative Council, due to alleged anti-party activities that threaten the unity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the grassroots level.
This decision was reached during a plenary session held on Tuesday at the Parliament House in Dutse, as the APC grapples with the consequences of recent primary elections.
Sources indicate that Maigari’s suspension is part of a broader wave of disciplinary actions within the Jigawa APC, following the primary elections. Several special advisers and assistants have also faced suspension across various levels of government for similar allegations.
Maigari, who concurrently represents Auyo Ward as a city councilor, was subject to a motion presented by Majority Leader Lawan Dansul. This motion called for disciplinary measures against him for actions perceived as undermining party unity.
During the parliamentary session, Dansul emphasized the importance of maintaining the party’s integrity as the nation prepares for the 2027 elections. He highlighted that Maigari’s conduct was detrimental to the APC’s unity, stability, and progress within the state.
Following the motion’s endorsement, Jigawa State House of Assembly Speaker Haruna Dangyatin announced Maigari’s immediate suspension. He asserted that the House cannot remain idle while issues of party discipline arise.
In his announcement, Dangyatin declared, “Mr. Haruna Maigari has been suspended from his position due to allegations of anti-party activities.” He also made it clear that the Assembly is committed to reinforcing party discipline at all governance levels within the state.
The Speaker initiated a commission of inquiry tasked with examining the allegations against Maigari, which is expected to report its findings within two weeks. He noted, “The committee’s role is to establish the facts and recommend further actions based on its findings.”
Furthermore, Dangyatin instructed the suspended council chairman to immediately transfer all official documents to the Deputy Speaker of the Auyo Legislative Council to ensure the seamless continuation of parliamentary duties.
In related developments, the House of Representatives received a formal notification from Governor Umar Namadi regarding an official engagement. The governor is scheduled to attend a two-day West African Rice Investment Roundtable in Accra, Ghana, from June 2 to June 3, 2026. Dangyatin highlighted that the governor’s participation aims to attract investment into the rice value chain in Jigawa.
