Major Drug Bust Targets International Cartel in Nigeria
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has brought serious charges against 63-year-old drug kingpin Anochiri Innocent, three Mexican nationals, and six other Nigerians in connection with extensive drug-related offenses. The indictment was revealed by NDLEA Media and Advocacy Director-General Femi Babafemi, who stated that the suspects face a total of 11 criminal charges related to the establishment of a clandestine laboratory and the production of 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine valued at an estimated N480 billion.
Charges Filed in Federal High Court
The defendants, including Innocent, Juan Carlos Mesa Torero, 49, and Nemesio Martinez Felix, 46—all Mexican citizens—were arraigned before Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court in Lagos. The arraignment took place on July 10, 2026, as part of a sweeping operation aimed at dismantling a significant drug manufacturing operation located in Mowe Village, within Ogun State.
Coordinated Raids Lead to Multiple Arrests
This operation stems from coordinated raids conducted by NDLEA operatives in Ogun and Lagos between May 16 and 18, 2026. The initial arrests occurred in a super laboratory concealed in Mowe Forest, leading to the apprehension of suspects including Nwankwo Sunday Christian and Igwe Abuchi Remijus.
Key Figures in the Drug Operation Detained
The NDLEA also named three additional Mexican experts involved in meth production: Jesús López Valles, and further apprehended cartel leader Anochiri Innocent at his luxury residence in Lekki, Lagos State. Following this, a subsequent raid on May 18, 2026, targeted another property linked to Innocent, resulting in the capture of another cartel affiliate, Kingsley Orike Omonufa.
Extensive Drug Manufacturing Charges
According to the NDLEA, operatives proceeded to raid another location associated with another suspect, Emeka Nwobamu, asserting that his residence served as a key hideout for the cartel. The 11-count indictment specifically outlines charges of conspiracy to set up clandestine laboratories for methamphetamine production between February and May 16, 2026, in contravention of Section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act.
Allegations of Chemical Trafficking and Production
Additional allegations include the organization and financing of a drug trafficking operation, illegal transportation of precursor chemicals—including toluene and acetone—from Lagos to the Mowe laboratory using various vehicles, which breach Section 20(1)(f) of the Act. The defendants are also charged with the unlawful production and possession of 2,419.48 kg of methamphetamine, violating multiple sections of the NDLEA Act.
Trial Proceedings Underway and Future Implications
When presented with the charges, all ten defendants pleaded not guilty. The prosecution commenced its case, calling seven witnesses since July 3, 2026. However, the defense has requested more time for preparation, prompting the court to remand the defendants at the Lagos Correctional Center and schedule further hearings for July 16 and 22.
In a statement regarding the case, NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa emphasized the significance of this operation in tackling industrial-scale drug production in Nigeria. He noted the alarming involvement of international cartels and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling these networks while encouraging public cooperation to aid their efforts.
