Strengthening Nigeria-India Relations through Strategic Partnership
Nigeria and India are actively working to deepen their strategic partnership across several key areas, including security, technology, education, and sustainable development. This commitment was reaffirmed during a recent courtesy visit by participants of the 66th course of the Indian National Defense College to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
Led by Anvita Sinha, the delegation’s visit formed part of an overseas study tour aimed at understanding Nigeria’s socio-economic development, foreign policy direction, security challenges, and strategic outlook. This initiative highlights the growing ties between the two nations.
During the meeting, Dunoma Ahmed, Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the long-standing and friendly relationship between Nigeria and India. He noted that the partnership is anchored in shared democratic values, historical connections, and increasing economic collaboration.
Mr. Ahmed described the visit as a significant opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and expand collaboration in critical domains such as defense, security, technology transfer, and sustainable development. He underscored Nigeria’s appreciation for India’s continued support in military training and professional development, which enhances institutional capacity and bolsters regional security efforts.
This dialogue fostered opportunities to strengthen cooperation in key areas, including counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, and border security management. Mr. Ahmed expressed Nigeria’s eagerness to expand collaboration with India, recognizing that joint efforts are vital for addressing contemporary security challenges and enhancing regional stability.
Furthermore, Nigeria’s commitment to South-South cooperation through multilateral frameworks, such as BRICS, was reaffirmed. The Permanent Secretary highlighted Nigeria’s influential role in advancing the goals of the African Union Agenda 2063, emphasizing regional peace initiatives, infrastructure development, and economic integration across Africa.
Colonel Manoj, India’s Defense Adviser to Nigeria, represented the visiting delegation and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the warm welcome and fruitful discussions. He echoed the sentiment of optimism that ongoing dialogue and collaboration will strengthen bilateral ties while significantly contributing to global peace, security, and development.
