INGLEWOOD, Calif. — U.S. Men’s National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino has announced that four players who received yellow cards will be benched for Thursday’s match against Turkey. This decision comes as a precaution to avoid potential suspensions for the Round of 32 match scheduled for July 1.
With the United States already securing the top position in Group D and Turkey facing elimination, the match will have no bearing on the final group standings. Consequently, midfielders Tyler Adams and Folarin Balogun, defender Chris Richards, and outside back Anthony Robinson will sit out, likely not entering the game at all.
Strategic Player Management
All yellow cards issued during the group stage that do not lead to suspensions will be nullified at the conclusion of this stage. Pochettino addressed the situation directly at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, emphasizing that it would be unwise to risk further yellow cards. “It’s unnecessary to take the risk and get another yellow card that could hinder our progress,” he stated.
He also expressed concerns about a player receiving a yellow card during the match, which could lead to an unfair suspension. “Imagine a scenario where a player is sent off with a questionable yellow card and is unable to advance. I want to avoid that dilemma,” he added.
The U.S. coach pointed out that players such as Malik Tillman may also be rested after an exhausting club season. Meanwhile, those who have not had substantial playing time at their clubs, like Sergiño Dest and Alex Freeman, could see different treatment.
To this end, Pochettino noted, “We have various situations that allow us to optimize our results and performances. Our goal is to manage our team effectively to ensure we advance in better shape.”
In terms of player availability, Christian Pulisic, who missed the previous match against Australia due to a calf injury, is expected to return, though his role remains uncertain. “We’ll decide if he can start or if he’ll come off the bench in the second half,” said Pochettino regarding the star forward.
On a less positive note, midfielder Cristian Roldan, a potential substitute for Adams, hasn’t participated in full training due to a quadriceps issue. “We must evaluate tomorrow whether he will be available,” Pochettino stated. “He has a minor problem with his quadriceps, but he is improving well.”
As for Turkey, Pochettino hopes that his players will display the intensity needed to conclude a challenging World Cup on a high note. Having lost both of their prior matches, Turkey lacks a path to advancement. “This is a World Cup game, and our culture revolves around pride in representing our country,” he remarked. “I have no doubt that the Turkish team will come out strong with competitive spirit. While they may face challenges, we expect a tough match ahead.”
The U.S. is likely to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 after Bosnia’s victory over Qatar secured their first-ever World Cup finals qualification.
