Nigeria’s Legal Education System Calls for Practical Exposure
Etigwe Uwa Etigwe, SAN, the founding partner of Streamsowers & Köhn (SSK), advocates for an enhanced legal education system in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for more practical courtroom experience. This call comes as Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) clinched the title in SSK’s inaugural Moot Court Competition held in Lagos.
Celebrating 20 Years of SSK Through Advocacy Competition
The Moot Court Competition, organized to celebrate SSK’s 20th anniversary, gathered law schools nationwide for an event aimed at evaluating participants’ skills in legal research, written advocacy, and oral argumentation. The competition was designed to provide a realistic platform for aspiring lawyers to demonstrate their capabilities.
Wide Participation and Rigorous Selection Process
Seventeen universities from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria took part in the competition, presenting commemorative documents centered around hypothetical legal disputes across various legal fields. Following a thorough blind evaluation by independent jurists, five institutions were selected to advance to the final stage.
Final Showdown Features Intense Oral Arguments
The final round showcased an oral argument session where participants articulated opposing views on a mock lawsuit before a panel of judges. Although Bayero University was recognized for presenting a compelling case, it was OAU that emerged with the highest overall score to secure victory in the competition.
Recognition of Talent and Efforts to Bridge the Gap
Ase Hepzibah Adiamorogi, representing OAU, received the title of Best Lawyer for her performance during the finals. Etigwe highlighted that introducing students to realistic courtroom dynamics can help close the gap between academic theory and practical experience, preparing them more effectively for their professional journeys.
Fair Evaluation Ensures Meritocracy
SSK partner Tamno Atekebo underscored the importance of fairness in the competition, noting that all submissions were evaluated anonymously by senior law lecturers from various universities. This approach ensured that assessments were based solely on merit, fostering an equitable environment for all participants.
Developing Essential Skills for Future Lawyers
The competition evaluated a range of vital skills, including legal writing, research, analytical reasoning, and oral advocacy—attributes increasingly indispensable for lawyers navigating today’s dynamic legal services market. Chinasa Unegbunam, another partner at SSK, remarked that the caliber of submissions indicated the immense potential of Nigerian law students when afforded proper opportunities.
Initiative Supports Future Legal Professionals
Other partners at the firm characterized the moot court competition as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts to enhance legal education. The initiative not only offers students vital networking opportunities with their peers but also equips them with invaluable courtroom experience ahead of their transition into the legal profession. This alignment with practical legal education highlights the growing significance of moot court competitions in cultivating the skills necessary for success in the legal community.
