Federal Authorities Apprehend Illegal Immigrant Linked to Fatal Oregon Crash
Federal immigration authorities have arrested Rajinder Kumar, a 32-year-old illegal immigrant from India, who is charged with causing a tragic accident that claimed the lives of a newlywed couple in Oregon. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the arrest, stating that Kumar was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following his release by local authorities.
Details of the Tragic Incident
On November 24, Kumar allegedly obstructed both lanes of Highway 20 in Deschutes County, leading to a catastrophic crash involving a semi-truck and a Subaru Outback. The collision resulted in the deaths of William Micah Carter and Jennifer Lynn Lower, who had been married for only 16 days at the time of the accident.
Release and Arrest by ICE
Kumar was initially released by Oregon authorities on April 2, reportedly due to their refusal to cooperate with ICE. Following this release, he was apprehended by ICE on April 22 and is now detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, with deportation proceedings underway.
Criminal Charges and Immigration Status
The DHS has confirmed that Kumar faces charges including manslaughter and reckless endangerment. According to their reports, he entered the United States illegally near Lukeville, Arizona, in November 2022. He was subsequently released by the Biden administration and obtained a work permit in 2023, along with a commercial driver’s license in California.
Criticism of Sanctuary Policies
Lauren Biss, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State, criticized California’s Governor Gavin Newsom for allowing the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses to individuals like Kumar. Biss stated that Kumar’s reckless driving had catastrophic consequences and highlighted the risks associated with sanctuary policies. She urged that these policies jeopardize public safety by allowing dangerous individuals to remain in communities.
Impact on Public Safety
Biss emphasized the repercussions of sanctuary policies, asserting that each release of potentially dangerous illegal immigrants by sanctuary jurisdictions poses a risk to American lives. She expressed gratitude towards ICE agents for their efforts in removing Kumar from the highways, ensuring he would not pose a danger to other families in the future.
Ongoing Investigation and Response
Fox News Digital has sought comments from both Newsom’s office and the DHS to gain clarity on the cooperation level between Oregon authorities and federal immigration officials. The incident remains under investigation, with public safety concerns at the forefront of ongoing discussions surrounding immigration and sanctuary policies.
