Ryan Reynolds Expresses Disappointment Over Wrexham’s Playoff Exit
Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds shared his deep disappointment on Saturday, revealing he was “absolutely devastated” after the club’s hopes of reaching the Premier League were dashed for this season.
The Welsh team fell short, finishing just two points behind a playoff position in the Championship following a dramatic 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough in their final regular-season match.
Hull City secured a crucial 2-1 win against Norwich, propelling them into sixth place, the last available playoff spot. This loss meant Wrexham missed out on their chance for promotion after an exhilarating campaign.
Oli McBurnie’s decisive goal for Hull in the 67th minute raised controversy, as it appeared to be scored from an offside position. However, video review technology is not utilized in the English Football League, leaving the incident unresolved.
This outcome has halted Wrexham’s remarkable trajectory of three consecutive promotions under the joint ownership of Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney. Their ascent began with their departure from the fifth tier in the 2022-23 season, a journey chronicled in the acclaimed FX series, *Welcome to Wrexham*.
Despite the disappointment, finishing seventh represents Wrexham’s best performance ever, surpassing their 15th-place finish in the Second Division back in 1978-79. Reynolds echoed sentiments from manager Phil Parkinson, highlighting the pride the club should feel despite the setback.
Reynolds took to X to share his thoughts, expressing pride in the season’s achievements: “While we were completely disappointed in today’s result, we are incredibly proud of our season. We have come a long way in five years and this was the best result in our 150-year history. There is still work to do, but for now, the Reds have much to be proud of.”
This season marked a historic return for Wrexham to the Second Division for the first time since the 1980s. However, the sting of missing the playoff spot was palpable, as players were seen sitting dejectedly on the pitch after the final whistle, even as the match between Hull and Norwich continued.
Entering the match in sixth place on goal difference, Wrexham initially fell behind early when Middlesbrough scored in the fourth minute. However, by the 41st minute, goals from Josh Windass and Sam Smith swung the match in their favor, giving them a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, Middlesbrough equalized just before halftime, and Wrexham missed a golden opportunity late in the game that could have secured their playoff spot on goal difference.
Ultimately, though Wrexham finished two points ahead of Hull, manager Phil Parkinson, who oversaw an investment of around $40 million last summer, remains optimistic about the future. He stated, “If this team stays the way they are and sticks together in pre-season, we’ll be even stronger next year. We know where we want to strengthen and what we need to improve. We’re going to do that and make this team as strong as possible to take on next year’s challenges.”
