The True Essence of Democracy
Democracy is more than just voting; it is fundamentally about the vibrant competition of ideas. At its core, democracy ensures that those in power are held accountable and can be challenged by the electorate. Without this essential competition, elections become meaningless, parliaments lack dissent, and citizens find themselves participating in a facade of choice without any real agency.
Historical Foundations of Democratic Consent
This understanding of democracy draws from a rich political heritage that Nigeria has inherited. John Locke famously asserted that legitimate governance arises from the consent of the governed. This implies that individuals do not surrender their freedoms entirely to their rulers but delegate power under specific conditions that serve their interests. Should that trust be violated, citizens reserve the right to withdraw their consent. Montesquieu further emphasized that freedom thrives when power is subject to checks and balances, preventing any single entity from monopolizing authority. When these checks fade, the essence of consent becomes merely a formality, leading elected officials towards absolutism, a core risk that the democratic framework was designed to mitigate.
The Critical Role of Opposition Parties
In this context, the significance of opposition parties cannot be overstated. They are not merely rival factions vying for power; they are vital institutions representing the population’s reserved right to dissent. A robust opposition compels those in power to govern with the awareness that they are not beyond challenge. Conversely, a weakened or fragmented opposition results in complacency among incumbents, solidifying consent into mere submission.
Assessing the State of Nigeria’s Opposition
With this framework, it’s noticeable that Nigeria’s opposition parties, currently sidelined from power, bear significant responsibility for the current democratic malaise. While the All Progressives Congress (APC) has indeed committed misdeeds worthy of scrutiny, its behavior is consistent with the nature of unchecked power. The failings of the opposition to adequately counterbalance this overreach are alarming. Instead of stepping up to check government overreach, they seem unprepared and fragmented, undermining their own potential for impactful governance.
Recent Events Highlighting Democratic Erosion
Recent developments in Ondo State exemplify this erosion of democratic norms. Observers noted the disintegration of consent mechanisms as the opposition failed to respond effectively to significant political events. When party members mobilized to vote, the outcome was inexplicably reversed, with winning candidates removed in favor of those favored by internal party power brokers. Such a blatant dismissal of voters’ choices highlights a troubling descent into autocracy, where the whims of party elites supersede the voice of the electorate.
Failure of Leadership within the Opposition
The opposition’s absence during these critical moments can’t merely be attributed to a lack of resources; it stems from a self-imposed disarmament. Rather than cultivating a cohesive political strategy or empowering grassroots support, opposition leaders have concentrated on personal political ambitions. Inaction and infighting have diminished their capacity to mount a credible challenge against the ruling party. The crucial infrastructure needed to convert public grievances into a formidable electoral base remains tragically undeveloped.
Urgent Action Required from Disenfranchised Candidates
As a matter of priority, politicians unjustly disqualified from primaries must actively reclaim their mandates. They should leverage all legal avenues to contest this disenfranchisement and expose the systemic corruption behind their removal. Accepting such violations passively not only compromises their integrity but undermines the democratic process itself. It is essential for the citizens of Nigeria to understand that their voices must continue to matter; otherwise, they risk succumbing to a cycle of political farce devoid of accountability.
The stakes in this ongoing struggle extend beyond individual elections; they are about the integrity of democracy itself. With a ruling party demonstrating unchecked power, it becomes imperative for existing and aspiring political actors, alongside the citizenry, to foster a robust opposition capable of safeguarding democratic principles. By prioritizing collective action over individual aspirations, Nigeria can reaffirm its commitment to a democracy that genuinely reflects the will of its people.
