At the heart of these discussions are critical issues surrounding human dignity, which are exacerbated when fear permeates the daily lives of our neighbors.
The United Methodist Baptismal Covenant commits us to oppose evil, injustice, and oppression in all forms—not just in our places of worship, but as a public moral obligation. This principle is increasingly relevant as many immigrant families in Dallas begin to perceive policy language through a lens of vulnerability. Questions such as “Will I be safe?” and “Will seeking assistance jeopardize my family?” overshadow their daily experiences. When trust between communities and public institutions erodes, the dignity of all individuals becomes endangered.
The strength of Dallas is undeniably enhanced by its immigrant population, whose labor, faith, and resilience significantly shape our city.
Justice should not only adhere to legal standards but also uphold fundamental human values. If fear is the prevailing narrative, it warrants concern from all sectors of society.

As an educator in Dallas, I witness firsthand how state policies affect my students daily. Governor Abbott’s threats to withhold $32.1 million in public safety funding unless local authorities align with federal immigration enforcement are far from abstract; they are having a tangible impact on the students in our classrooms.
Every week, I engage with students who dread the possibility of their parents being detained or deported. Some are grappling with the loss of loved ones, while others sit in class, uncertain if their families will still be there when they return home. This trauma manifests in decreased attention spans, behavioral challenges, and a pervasive sentiment of hopelessness. We cannot expect students to meet academic standards while their safety is compromised.
Additionally, public schools are grappling with funding shortages due to voucher programs that siphon off essential resources. These compounded pressures make nurturing strong educational environments increasingly difficult.
Governor Abbott serves all Texans, and our policies ought to reflect that commitment by fostering stability rather than sowing seeds of fear.
