Advocates Call for Immigration Policy Changes in Pennsylvania
On Friday, immigrant rights advocates gathered in the Capitol Rotunda to urge Governor Josh Shapiro to take immediate executive action against federal immigration enforcement in Pennsylvania. The demonstrators emphasized the need for the state to prioritize people over fear.
Calls for Action from State Leadership
“Pennsylvania is our home, and it is a home that embraces immigrants,” stated Jasmine Rivera, executive director of the Pennsylvania Immigration Coalition. Rivera encouraged Governor Shapiro to utilize his authority to protect vulnerable populations. Despite previous correspondence sent to the governor in March detailing their requests, Rivera noted a lack of response.
Governor’s Office Defends Past Actions
In contrast, Shapiro’s office highlighted his administration’s past efforts to counteract the Trump administration’s stringent immigration policies. Spokeswoman Rosie Rapowski stated, “Since taking office three years ago, Governor Shapiro has focused on safeguarding Pennsylvanians’ rights and will continue to act against federal overreach.” She reaffirmed the Governor’s commitment to protecting the rights of all residents.
Specific Demands from Advocates
Participants in the rally made several demands, including a halt to data-sharing practices with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Currently, ICE has access to two state databases—JNET and CLEAN—that can be queried without a judicial warrant, as explained by Alex Domingos, an advocacy and policy strategist for the ACLU of Pennsylvania. The lack of restrictions allows federal officials to access personal information without proper oversight.
Concerns over Child Welfare at Abraxas Academy
Advocates also urged the governor to issue an emergency order to remove children detained at Abraxas Academy in Morgantown, Berks County. The facility has been scrutinized for historical abuse allegations regarding its treatment of unaccompanied migrant children. A spokesperson for Abraxas emphasized their commitment to the welfare and rehabilitation of youth in their care, stating that they maintain strict oversight and zero tolerance for misconduct. The Department of Human Services is reportedly monitoring the facility’s conditions, but the advocates demand further action.
Additional Measures to Limit State Cooperation with ICE
Rally attendees urged Shapiro to strengthen regulations governing state police interactions with ICE, specifically asking for prohibitions on sharing information or providing transport during immigration arrests. Advocates insist that local cooperation with federal enforcement fosters an atmosphere of fear and exploitation, emphasizing the need for clear boundaries between state resources and federal immigration actions.
Impact of Federal Immigration Policies
A recent analysis highlights that federal immigration authorities classified over 5,550 arrests in Pennsylvania as “collateral” since August, often occurring in situations unrelated to serious criminal activity. The report indicates that a significant number of those arrested had previously committed only immigration-related offenses, raising concerns about the targeting and treatment of marginalized communities.
