Brooklyn Officials Question NYPD’s Relationship with Immigration Authorities
City officials in Brooklyn gathered on Monday to voice their concerns regarding the collaboration between federal immigration authorities and the city’s police department. This discussion has gained urgency following a recent incident involving protests at a local medical facility.
NYPD’s Response to Protesters Raises Concerns
The focus of the rally was the NYPD’s actions on Sunday morning when officers were dispatched to Wyckoff Medical Center to disperse a crowd protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Lawmakers contend that footage from the Citizen app indicates coordination with ICE, which they argue infringes upon the Sanctuary Act as protesters attempted to block hospital access.
Lawmakers Demand Accountability
In a passionate appeal, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso stated that the NYPD should refrain from any actions that would support ICE. He emphasized the importance of protecting undocumented individuals in the city. Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez echoed these sentiments, reminding attendees that undocumented individuals possess rights under U.S. law.
Concerns Over Police Conduct
Councilwoman Jennifer Gutierrez called for accountability from the police after witnessing what she characterized as cooperation with ICE, despite earlier assurances from Secretary Tisch that such collaboration would not occur. Her remarks highlighted the need for transparency regarding police actions during immigration-related protests.
Calls for Investigation into Law Enforcement Actions
Murad Awaudeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, urged for an investigation into the police’s conduct during the protests. He questioned where crowd control ends and collusion begins, advocating for clearer guidelines outlining police responses to immigration enforcement activities.
Mayoral Denial of Allegations
At an unrelated event, Mayor Zoran Mamdani categorically denied any allegations of collaboration between the NYPD and ICE regarding the incident at Wyckoff. He reassured community members that there was no assistance provided to ICE and emphasized the city’s commitment to protecting its immigrant population.
Federal Authorities Stand by Their Actions
The Department of Homeland Security defended their operation, asserting that it was a targeted enforcement action that resulted in the arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, an undocumented individual from Nigeria with a criminal record. Their statement indicated that Okeke sought medical attention after the arrest, prompting a crowd to gather outside the hospital.
Advocates Stress Immigrant Rights
Awaudeh concluded with a reminder that individuals, regardless of their immigration status, have fundamental rights that must be upheld. He criticized the messaging from federal authorities, asserting the need for respect and protection of vulnerable populations within the community.
