Illegal Immigrant Truck Driver Charged in Fatal California Crash
An undocumented immigrant truck driver was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a multi-vehicle crash in California that resulted in two fatalities. According to federal authorities, the suspect attempted to flee the scene.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the driver as Manvir Singh, an illegal immigrant from India. He entered the United States through Arizona in 2023 and was subsequently released by the Biden administration, officials disclosed.
Singh’s arrest is particularly noteworthy as he represents the fourth truck driver of Indian descent to face charges for a fatal incident in the past year. This trend has raised concerns among authorities about the increasing number of illegal immigrant drivers operating commercial vehicles in the U.S.
Concerns Over Public Safety with Undocumented Drivers
Federal officials have expressed alarm over the risks associated with allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs). They argue that permitting individuals who may not speak English to drive large trucks or transport hazardous materials on American roads poses a significant danger to public safety.
At approximately 12:20 p.m. on the day of the accident, Singh reportedly veered off the road and collided with a guardrail, subsequently causing a crash involving three other vehicles. Witnesses state that he attempted to escape on foot before being apprehended by officers from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
Multiple Charges Filed Against Singh
Singh is facing several serious charges, including gross negligence resulting in death, hit-and-run causing bodily injury, and resisting or obstructing a law enforcement officer. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has requested that local authorities take Singh into federal custody.
Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss condemned the circumstances surrounding the case, stating that allowing individuals who have entered the country illegally, especially those with criminal backgrounds, to drive trucks is unacceptable. She emphasized the need for Congress to pass “Dalila’s Law,” which seeks to prohibit the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
Legislative Efforts Highlighted
“Dalila’s Law” is a proposed federal legislation named after a young girl who sustained severe injuries in a 2024 crash allegedly involving an undocumented driver. The ongoing incidents underscore the urgency of tightening regulations surrounding commercial driving permits for undocumented individuals.
This recent crash is not an isolated incident; it adds to a disturbing pattern of accidents linked to undocumented truck drivers. In April, ICE arrested another undocumented driver who had been issued a CDL in California for allegedly murdering a newlywed couple in Oregon. The driver was initially released from a sanctuary jurisdiction before being taken back into custody by federal agents.
Additional Cases Raise Alarm
Earlier in February, a different undocumented truck driver in Pennsylvania was charged after swerving into oncoming traffic, resulting in the deaths of four people. Moreover, last December, DHS reported another deadly crash involving a Chinese CDL holder who allegedly failed an English proficiency test.
Despite ongoing concerns and incidents, the debate over undocumented immigrants behind the wheel continues, raising questions about the effectiveness of current regulations and the need for legal reforms. The growing incidents of fatal accidents linked to undocumented immigrant truck drivers compel stakeholders to reevaluate safety practices on American highways.
