A man was arrested today for allegedly making threats against the Madison Heights Mosque. The incident began on Sunday when a threatening voicemail was left at the Islamic Community Center located on Dequindre near 11 Mile Road. Authorities reported that the individual indicated intentions to harm people and labeled Muslims as terrorists.
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations commended the police for their swift action in apprehending the suspect.
US Supreme Court Upholds End to Temporary Protected Status
The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of the Trump administration’s initiative to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This program allows individuals fleeing violence in their home countries to reside and work in the United States. The decision may significantly impact individuals from nations such as Lebanon, Haiti, Honduras, and Burma.
Michigan Republican Congressman Steve Frisbie, who represents the 44th Congressional District that includes Battle Creek—a community home to thousands of Burmese refugees—expressed his support for the judicial ruling. However, he stressed that asylum should still be sought by those escaping persecution.
“I’m fully supportive of allowing them to come to this country. We need to assess each individual case or family background to determine the legitimacy of their fears and their reasons for fleeing,” Frisbie stated.
Over the past year, the government has deported numerous immigrants while their asylum requests were still pending in the judicial system, with some being detained upon arrival for their hearings.
Detroit Hosts Conference for Immigrant Advocates
Immigrant advocates convened in Detroit to establish a series of policy goals that they aim to present to candidates for state and federal office. Strangers No Longer, a Catholic-led organization active throughout Michigan, took the lead in this initiative.
The proposed goals include permitting individuals to secure driver’s licenses irrespective of their immigration status, enhancing oversight of immigration detention facilities, and ceasing local police collaboration with federal immigration enforcement. Advocates also emphasize the need for stronger due process protections for detainees.
Governor Whitmer Signals Possible Recall of Michigan Troops
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has indicated her intention to recall 170 Michigan National Guard members stationed in Washington, D.C., should the Trump administration deploy them to address crime and immigration issues. The governor noted that the troops were originally mobilized to ensure safety during the celebrations for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Dossin Great Lakes Museum Launches Community Art Project
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum has introduced a community paint-by-number project titled “Currents in Color,” created by artist Bronte Williamson. This project was selected following an application process earlier in the spring.
The resulting mural, measuring 32 by 8 feet, was painted by community members over the summer and will be prominently displayed on the museum building located on Bell Island. The museum plans to soon share details on how the community can get involved in painting future projects.
Detroit-born artist Dan Robbins, who developed the paint-by-numbers format, continues to inspire collaborative artistic endeavors within the community.
