PDP Urges Bayelsa Government to Prioritize Combatting Hunger and Poverty
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has urged Governor Senator Douye Diri to prioritize the fight against hunger, poverty, and economic hardship in the latter half of 2026. The party emphasizes the need for decisive action to tackle these pressing issues that affect the daily lives of ordinary Bayelsans.
Declining purchasing power and rising living costs have left many families struggling to meet basic needs, causing growing concern within the party. They highlighted that, despite the state’s increased revenues from improved derivation and enhanced federal allocations, the living conditions for many residents have deteriorated, making hunger and poverty a common challenge across communities.
In a statement issued by the state Public Relations Secretary, Mr. Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP underscored that hunger knows no political affiliation, tribe, or religion, and asserted that all governments should prioritize the welfare of their citizens above other concerns. They are calling on the state administration to invest in direct programs that create jobs, stimulate economic activity, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and empower both youth and women.
Additionally, the PDP expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of tangible domestic and foreign investment, despite numerous memorandums of understanding (MoUs) proclaimed by the government over the years. They believe that such initiatives have yet to yield the expected benefits for economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development in the region.
The statement urged the government to go beyond merely signing agreements; instead, it should ensure these partnerships translate into real-world advantages for the citizens. The party highlighted that, despite a purported prosperity agenda from the current government, widespread hardship, unemployment, and economic distress dominate the landscape, leaving many Bayelsans feeling disillusioned.
The PDP called for state authorities to develop effective institutions, invest in industries with significant job creation potential, and promote comprehensive skills acquisition programs aimed at youth and women. The urgency for a strategic blueprint that fosters intentional wealth and job creation was also emphasized as a means to restore economic confidence in the region.
As it stands, the PDP expresses its commitment as a responsible opposition party to support genuine efforts aimed at alleviating the hunger and poverty faced by the people of Bayelsa. They aim to contribute constructive policy ideas and practical solutions, while asserting that the current APC government is struggling to offer the innovative, people-driven policies necessary to address rising socio-economic challenges.
As the second half of the year begins, the PDP reassures party members and the people of Bayelsa of their commitment to providing purpose-driven, compassionate leadership. The party remains optimistic about the potential for a brighter future and is dedicated to restoring governance that genuinely reflects the hopes, aspirations, and welfare of the populace.
